Our Assessment: The Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) is one of the most legendary firearms in U.S. military history, designed by John Moses Browning and first introduced in 1918 during the final months of World War I. The BAR was intended as a “walking fire” light machine gun, allowing troops to advance under suppressive fire. Its .30-06 Springfield chambering gave it formidable stopping power, and it quickly became a staple of U.S. forces.
By World War II, the BAR had evolved into the M1918A2, which was widely used by American infantry, particularly as a squad automatic weapon. Unlike belt-fed machine guns, the BAR was magazine-fed, providing mobility and firepower on the battlefield. It saw extensive service in key battles like Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Pacific campaign, proving indispensable for fire superiority in small-unit tactics. The BAR continued to serve through the Korean War and even into Vietnam, before finally being phased out in favor of more modern designs.
Ohio Ordnance Works has done an exceptional job in recreating this classic rifle with the 1918A3 SLR, a semi-automatic version that retains the aesthetics and legendary durability of the original while being accessible to civilian shooters. This rifle retains the tilting-lock, long-stroke gas-piston system of the original, ensuring reliable operation. Whether you’re a historical firearms enthusiast, collector, or shooter looking for an iconic and powerful rifle, this 1918A3 SLR represents an outstanding opportunity to own a piece of history.
