Type of Finish: None Remaining, Brown Patina with Areas of White Metal and Oxidation

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright with strong rifling. There is light fouling and possible light corrosion. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 7.5/10.

Overall Condition: The rifle has no remaining original finish, showing a brown patina in most areas with some spots of exposed white metal. There is oxidation and surface rust on the lever. The screw heads are serviceable, and the markings remain clear. Despite its age and finish loss, the rifle remains solid. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fair to Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with a bayonet and scabbard, a sling, two chamber inserts to convert from .577/450 to .45 Colt or .45 ACP, a box of reloading dies for .577/450, 75 brass casings (24-gauge, 2.5” long), and matching projectiles. The bayonet shows its age, and the scabbard has lost much of its suppleness.

Our Assessment: The Martini-Henry IC1 was a key development in British military firearms, seeing service in the late 19th century and gaining fame in colonial conflicts, particularly the Anglo-Zulu War. The rifle’s robust falling-block action made it a durable and reliable choice for the British Empire’s far-flung battles.

This particular example, dated 1879, is a fantastic piece of history. While it has lost its original finish and shows signs of age, it retains a strong bore and functional mechanics, making it a viable shooter with the included ammunition components. The additional chamber inserts for .45 Colt and .45 ACP provide versatility for modern shooters looking to enjoy this historical rifle without the cost of original .577/450 rounds.

With its bayonet, sling, reloading dies, brass casings, and projectiles, this rifle is a complete package for collectors and enthusiasts. Whether you’re a historical firearms collector, a shooter interested in black powder-era rifles, or someone looking for a fascinating display piece, this Martini-Henry IC1 offers history, functionality, and character in one package.
