Sights / Optics: The rifle is fitted with a traditional front blade sight and a rear notch sight, appropriate for precision shooting with a long rifle.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The rifle is stocked in beautiful curly maple, exhibiting striking figure and craftsmanship. The stock features intricate carving and brasswork, adding to its aesthetic and historical appeal. A scrimshawed ivory medallion is inlaid into the wrist, bearing the initials “JH,” which is known to stand for John Hudick. Another scrimshaw inlay on the patchbox reads “A PATRIOT’S GUN.” Additionally, the left side of the buttstock has a colorful scrimshaw piece featuring an American eagle, adding a patriotic and artistic element to this fine rifle. The stock has light scuffs throughout, but no major damage or structural issues, and rates in very good condition overall.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling, suitable for both target shooting and traditional black powder hunting. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains nearly all of its white original finish, with light handling marks, some heavy oxidation and scattered scuffs. The brass fittings and scrimshaw work are well-executed and remain crisp. The markings and decorative elements are clear and sharp. The screw heads are unmarred, and the overall craftsmanship is evident throughout. This rifle rates in very good condition.

Mechanics: The flintlock throws a strong spark, and the set trigger is crisp, ensuring a light and precise pull when engaged. The lock functions as intended, with a smooth hammer and frizzen movement. We did not fire this rifle. As with all black powder firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
