Our Assessment: The Arisaka Type 30 was Japan’s first true small-caliber bolt-action rifle and laid the groundwork for later designs such as the Type 38 and Type 99. Designed by Colonel Nariakira Arisaka, the Type 30 was issued to Japanese forces at the turn of the 20th century and saw extensive use in conflicts such as the Russo-Japanese War and the early phases of World War I. While later models refined the design, the Type 30 remains a significant piece of military history.

For collectors, the Type 30 is a fascinating piece due to its transitional role in Japanese rifle development. Its markings, including the chrysanthemum and arsenal stamps, make it a desirable acquisition, particularly when found in its original configuration. While many were updated or reworked over time, finding an intact example is becoming increasingly rare.

This rifle would be a great addition to any collection of Japanese militaria or early bolt-action service rifles. Whether for historical appreciation, display, or a restoration project, this Arisaka Type 30 offers a glimpse into the evolution of Japanese military arms.
