Caliber: .22 Long Rifle

Action Type: Single Action, Four-Barrel Pepperbox with Rotating Firing Pin

Barrel Length: Approximately 2.5” (Standard for Sharps Pepperbox Models)

Sights / Optics: This model was manufactured without traditional sights, designed for point-and-shoot close-quarters self-defense.

Markings: The left side of the frame is marked “C. Sharps Patent 1859,” while the right side of the frame is marked “C. Sharps Co. Philada PA” and “22LR CAL.” The bottom of the barrel cluster is marked “178,” matching the frame marking on the butt, confirming its early production.

Grip Configuration & Condition: The revolver is fitted with smooth walnut grip panels, which remain solid and well-fitted. They exhibit light handling marks but no cracks or significant wear, retaining their original integrity.

Type of Finish: Originally blued barrels with a brass frame.

Finish Originality: Original, with approximately 60% finish retention

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling, showing minimal wear or fouling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10, making this a remarkably well-preserved example for an antique firearm.

Overall Condition: This pistol retains approximately 60% of its original finish, with the barrels showing scuffing and wear, giving them a gray patina. The brass frame is bright in many places, with noticeable brightening near the leading edges. The markings remain sharp and legible, and the overall finish is consistent with its age and use.

Mechanics: The rotating firing pin functions properly, and the trombone-style barrel release mechanism, located under the frame, works as intended. The action cocks and cycles smoothly, making this one of the better mechanically sound examples of a Sharps Pepperbox. We did not fire this pistol. As with all antique firearms, a thorough inspection is recommended before any potential use.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: The C. Sharps Pepperbox was a clever alternative to revolvers in an era when Smith & Wesson held a patent on bored-through cylinders. With four fixed barrels and a rotating firing pin, it allowed for quick follow-up shots without violating patent restrictions. This design proved successful, with over 85,000 produced between 1859 and 1874, making it one of the most widely used non-revolver cartridge pistols of its time.

This particular example, serial number 178, is a very early production model, making it even more desirable. The frame remains bright, and the barrels, though worn, still retain approximately 60% of their finish. The trombone-style release and rotating firing pin function correctly, and the bore is exceptionally well-preserved, rating 9/10.

For collectors of early cartridge firearms, antique firearm enthusiasts, or those looking for a historically significant small defensive pistol, this Sharps Pepperbox represents an innovative chapter in American firearms history. Whether displayed in a collection, kept for preservation, or carefully restored, this pistol stands as a well-engineered and historically important firearm from the mid-19th century.
