The right side of the receiver’s chamber ring is marked “380318”, found again scribed on the bottom of the bolt.

Sights / Optics: There is a serrated, ramped base fixed to the front of the barrel with a dovetail filled with a blank. The base is grooved for a hood which is not present. There is a dovetail at the rear of the barrel, currently filled with a blank. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped with a one-piece Redfield base and rings holding a Weaver K4 60C 4x scope with crosshair reticle. The scope has some minor nicks and scratches in the body with fairly clear glass. The left of the receiver at the rear is drilled, tapped and filled for a peep-sight mount (none present).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is checkered walnut with pistol grip, monte-carlo comb, ventilated brown rubber The Sports Shop recoil pad, and sling studs front and rear. The action has been bedded to the stock. The stock has scattered nicks, scuffs and scratches. There is a tiny loss at the left-rear of the floorplate. There is sanding around the rear edge of the butt. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the recoil pad, 12 1/8″ to the back of the wood, indicating that the stock has been cut. The pad has minor wear and remains supple. Overall, the stock is in about Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Blue & Black Alloy Bottom Metal

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. There are some light nicks and scratches, most notable on the floorplate. The bolt knob has handling wear. The action shows operational wear. There are tool marks around the mounting screws on the bottom metal. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good-plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the right-rear of the bolt. Pushed forwards, the safety is OFF. If pulled back all the way, it locks both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the installed scope as described.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 Featherweight rifle chambered in .243 Winchester and made in 1956. The rifle shows light use with a great bore and strong mechanics. It comes with a vintage Weaver 4x scope installed. The original open sights have been removed, but the dovetails are still present should you wish to replace them. The .243 Win. cartridge is a great cartridge for longer shots on small-medium game and is a good pairing with a lightweight bolt rifle such as this. As great as this rifle would be for hunting, it is also a desirable pre-64 Winchester in good shape. It should make a great addition to a Winchester collection or a great deer rifle for the lucky winner. Please see our photos and good luck!
