The LOP measures 13″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock and handguard wood have scratches, depressions, and scuffs throughout. The rear handguard piece has a small crack just off-center to the left and a small chip just in front of the retention clip. The butt of the stock has 5 chips on the right side just in front of the buttplate. The buttplate has retained almost all of its finish but the checkering is semi-dull except on the door where it’s still mostly sharp. The stock and handguards rate in about Good Overall condition for C&R given their age.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright. The rifling is shallowly defined. There is minor erosion in the grooves for the first third and last third of the barrel. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 6/10.

Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 90% of its finish. There is light operation wear on the friction surfaces. The edges of the trigger guard show thinning and have some surface scratches. The gas tube has lost most of its finish and has surface scratches throughout. The crown of the muzzle has no finish and has surface scratches. The flat in front of the rear sight shows signs of wear. The markings are deep and easily visible. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good to Very Good condition for C&R given its age.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: Harrington & Richardson Arms Company (H&R) played a significant role in the production of M-1 Garand rifles in the post-war era. As one of the contracted manufacturers for the US military, H&R contributed to the vital effort to re-supply American troops with this iconic firearm during the Cold War. H&R manufactured M-1 Garands from 1953-56, and while they didn’t have the wartime production history of other manufacturers like Springfield Armory or Winchester, H&R rifles still became notable for their quality and reliability. The venerable H&R M-1 Garand was chambered in .30-06 Springfield, and featured the same semi-automatic action and eight-round en-bloc clip as the other variants. H&R’s M-1s rifles have garnered appreciation from collectors and shooters alike for their craftsmanship and performance, and represent a distinctive chapter in the history of this legendary rifle. Their production aided America’s post-war military rebuilding and constant readiness, and their legacy endures as a testament to H&R’s contribution to American firearms manufacturing during a pivotal period.
