Our Assessment: The Standard MFG Thompson Model 1922 Tommy Gun is a reverential nod to the iconic Thompson submachine guns of the 20th century, known colloquially as “Tommy Guns.” These firearms are legendary in the annals of American history, prominently used by law enforcement, gangsters, and soldiers alike. The 1922 model by Standard Manufacturing captures the essence of that storied past while implementing modern manufacturing techniques. It’s chambered in .22 LR, offering a more affordable and accessible shooting experience compared to its bigger caliber counterparts.
Despite the scaled-down chambering, the Model 1922 maintains the hefty construction and design features that have come to define the Thompson line. The gun includes a machined aluminum receiver and a barrel with a “Cutts” compensator, an iconic muzzle device that aids in reducing recoil and muzzle climb. Additionally, the rifle features genuine American walnut furniture that brings an element of classic craftsmanship to this vintage-inspired firearm. The rear sight is fully adjustable, offering the shooter some degree of customization in achieving their preferred sight picture.
By virtue of its lineage and attention to detail, the Standard MFG Thompson Model 1922 stands as an intriguing blend of past and present. It offers the contemporary shooter a chance to experience the look and feel of a true classic, without the overpowering recoil and expense associated with the original. Whether you’re a collector with an affinity for American firearm history or a recreational shooter looking for an iconic range toy, the Model 1922 serves as a beautifully constructed, highly shootable piece of nostalgia.
