Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “-WINCHESTER MODEL 70 416 REM. MAG. / –MADE IN NEW HAVEN CT. U.S.A.-”, the right is marked “-CLASSIC SUPER EXPRESS-“. The top-rear of the barrel has an ovalled “WP” proof. The left of the receiver has “WINCHESTER / -TRADE MARK-“. The bottom of the floorplate is marked in gold fill, “SUPER EXPRESS”. The right of the chamber ring is marked with the serial number and the bolt is matched and marked with the last four digits of the serial number.
Barrel Length: 24″
Sights/Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed into a hooded, checkered, ramped base screwed to the barrel at the muzzle. The rear sight is a folding “U” notch sight that is adjustable for windage and elevation, it is dovetailed into a base that is fixed to the barrel at the rear. The top of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled for an optic mount (none present).
Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is one-piece checkered wood with two recoil lugs, capped pistol grip, monte carlo comb with cheekpiece, orange rubber Winchester buttpad, and inlet sling swivel mount on the belly (there is another sling mount on the bottom of the barrel in front of the forend). The stock has a few minor marks, but no notable damage. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 5/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The pad shows minor wear. Overall, the stock is in about Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, just a little stubborn fouling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. The action shows minor operational wear. There is some minor oxidation on the bottom metal in front of the floorplate and light tool marks at the rear trigger guard mounting screw. Otherwise, there are only light handling marks. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Fine-Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the rear of the bolt. Pulled to the rear, the safety is ON, locking both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 is an iconic American sporting rifle which has been a staple of hunters for more than 80 years. This example is a Classic Super Express with a blued finish, 24” barrel, and checkered monte carlo comb stock. It was made in the time Winchester was well out of its fallow period. Efforts were made to set things back to rights when it came to the Model 70 and the classic series saw the return of the lauded control-feed bolt and cut checkering as opposed to pressed. Overall build quality is improved, and the perceived cheapness of post-64 rifles is nowhere to be found. Chambered in the beastly .416 Remington Magnum, you have the capability of taking down pretty much any game on the planet. The rifle appears to have spent more time in the safe than out, there are only a few marks, but nothing significant, and the bore is still nice. The rifle rates in Fine-Excellent condition and looks great, this will make for a great addition to a Winchester collection or companion on your next safari. Please see our photos and good luck!
