Markings: The barrel shank is marked with the Tula Arsenal logo (a star with an arrow inside), “1940” which is the date of manufacturer, the serial number “BH6740” and with inspection/refurbish markings. The bolt, magazine floorplate and buttplate have “6740”, the rear of the cocking knob is marked “82078”. The scope mount has been hand-scribed “BH6740”. The chamber ring has a PW Arms import mark including their serial number “079246”. The scope has standard Factory #357 NKV markings ca. 1943 with serial A-93903.

Sights/ Optics: The front sight is a dovetailed post on a ramp with a protective hood. There is also a tangent leaf rear sight with a “U”-notch which is graduated in 100s of meters from 1-20, inclusive. There is a 3.5x PU scope with post reticle attached to the rifle. The mount has been force matched with an electric pencil to the rifle’s serial number. The glass is fairly clear with scattered light wear in the body.
Stock Configuration & Condition/ Grip: The stock is two-piece wood featuring a nose-cap, a slot in the forend for the included cleaning rod, a handguard with brass caps, a sling eyelet situated between the barrel bands, forend finger grooves, a through bolt, a straight wrist, a slightly curved comb, a sling eyelet on the butt and a steel butt-plate. There is a large repair in the belly at the toe. There is a patch-repair on the left of the forend behind the front sling eyelet. The stock has been relieved for the installed scope mount. There are scattered nicks, scuffs and scratches. The LOP is 13 3/8” from the trigger to the rear of the buttplate. The plate has light wear, mostly at the heel and toe. Overall, the stock is in Very Good condition as refurbished.

Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright with well defined rifling. It has not been counter-bored. There is scattered light erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 7 or 8 out of 10.
Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. There are some light handling marks, nicks and scuffs. There are some scattered oil stains. The markings remain mostly clear, some inspection marks are worn or poorly struck. The screwheads are lightly tooled and remain serviceable. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good-plus condition as refurbished.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, thorough and consistent cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Mosin m/1891-30 was the standard issue rifle of the Red Army from 1930 until the end of WWII, and the “snayperskaya” variant proved one of the most effective sniper rifles of the conflict. This particular specimen has been assembled as a sniper variant of the m/1891-30. It is based on a 1940 Tula Arsenal barrel with a PW Arms import mark on the receiver. The rifle had its scope mount and 1943 vintage PU scope installed either during a post-WWII refurbishment process or more likely by the importer. The snayperskaya m/1891-30 was put to lethal use by the likes of the skilled marksman Vasily Grigoryevich Zaitsev who dispatched over 200 Germans at Stalingrad (ca. 1942-1943) and the skilled markswoman Lyudmila Mikhailovna Pavlichenko who achieved over 300 confirmed kills during the fighting around Crimea (ca. 1941-1942). This will certainly appeal to historical collectors and fans of the stalwart Mosin Three Line Rifle. Good luck on your bid!
