Our Assessment: The Jeff Cooper Package Steyr Scout Rifle in .308 Winchester is a unique and highly regarded firearm, designed according to the specifications and vision of the late Colonel Jeff Cooper, a prominent figure in the field of firearms and tactical training. Colonel Cooper conceptualized the scout rifle as a versatile, lightweight, and practical weapon suitable for a variety of tasks, from hunting to self-defense. The Steyr Scout Rifle is built around these principles. Chambered in .308 Winchester, it offers a balance of power and manageable recoil, making it suitable for medium to large game hunting as well as tactical applications. The .308 Winchester is a widely respected cartridge known for its accuracy, versatility, and availability. One of the standout features of the Steyr Scout Rifle is its lightweight design. Weighing around 6.6 pounds (unloaded), the rifle is easy to carry over long distances, which is crucial for a scout rifle. This weight is achieved through the use of modern materials and a sleek design. The synthetic stock is not only lightweight but also durable, able to withstand harsh conditions without warping or cracking. The rifle features an integrated bipod, which is cleverly housed in the forend of the stock. This bipod can be quickly deployed for stable shooting from a prone or bench position, enhancing the rifle’s accuracy and versatility in the field. Additionally, the rifle has a built-in spare magazine holder in the stock, providing quick access to extra ammunition. The Steyr Scout Rifle also incorporates a short overall length, with a barrel length of 19 inches. This makes the rifle more maneuverable in tight spaces while still providing sufficient barrel length for accurate shooting and adequate velocity from the .308 Winchester cartridge. With its lightweight build, integrated features, and practical design, the Steyr Scout Rifle remains a testament to Colonel Cooper’s enduring influence on modern firearms.
