Our Assessment: Popularized by Dirty Harry movies, the N-frame long barrel S&W revolvers had already been on the shelf in America for a few decades; after the movie, the Model 29 was revered by target shooters and law enforcement alike. The 629 is the stainless steel version and has been made in a variety of configurations since 1979 filling just about any role that could be asked of a .44 Magnum revolver.“Go ahead, make my day”. Developed in a collaboration between Smith & Wesson and Remington with the input of big-bore handgun shooters including Elmer Keith, The .44 Magnum revolver and cartridge took the revolver world by storm in the 1950s, later to be known worldwide, even outside the firearms community, as “the most powerful handgun in the world” due to its portrayal in the Dirty Harry movies.
This example is a 629-1 with a 3” barrel, Combat style three finger, wood grips, and a stainless finish. The “6” is for stainless steel. The gun is in Fine Plus condition with a few scattered light marks, a great bore, and strong mechanics. If you’re a fan of Smith & Wessons in general this would be a nice addition to the collection. This would make a great “Bear Gun”. So good luck. But you’ve got to ask yourself one question. Do you feel lucky? Please see our pictures and take this thing home.-K.F.
