Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10 out of 10.
Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. There is some scuffing and light wear on the barrel in front of the forward barrel band. There are nicks and scratches on the guard. There is infrequent minor surface oxidation. The action shows operational wear and there is handling wear on the bolt knob. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box Paperwork and Accessories: There is a cleaning rod installed into the forend.
Our Assessment: This is a Walther DSM Model 34, a .22 caliber training rifle made by several German companies before the war. This one retains good strong markings in the metal, light wear in the stocks, a great bore, and strong mechanics. It has a Sturmabteilung (SA) cartouche on the stock indicating that it was issued to or purchased by a “brownshirts” training school. At the time this rifle was produced, a very bad man whose name can’t be used on GunBroker was the Chancellor of Germany and was in the process of secretly violating the Treaty of Versailles. The DSM 34 was a part of this violation, allowing for the drilling of citizens with military training rifles under the guise of recreational marksmanship rather than explicit military training. This example is in Very Good condition with fairly light wear considering its age and use. This is a neat little piece of WWII history and should make for a fun day at the range.
