Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “308MX”, “THE MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NORTH HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. / * * * * MODEL 308MX – CAL. 308 MARLIN EXPRESS * * * *”. The left side of the barrel at the receiver is marked with the “JM” proof. The top tang is marked with the serial number. The right side of the barrel is marked with Marlin’s two-line warning.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade dovetailed to a hooded, serrated, ramped base screwed to the barrel. The rear sight is a folding “U”-notch elevator sight dovetailed to the rear of the barrel. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped with a one-piece Weaver rail installed.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered walnut with a capped forearm, capped pistol grip, fluted straight comb, brown rubber Marlin buttpad and sling studs front and rear. The Marlin Bullseye is present in the belly. There are some minor nicks and light scuffs at the right-front of the forend. Otherwise, there are only light handling marks. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 5/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The pad shows hardly any wear, but there is some white discoloration. The stocks rate in Fine overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. There are a few minor nicks and scuffs, most notable just behind the front sight and on the right of the trigger guard. The action shows minor operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall this rifle rates in Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The lever safety is present. There is also a push safety on the receiver that blocks the hammer. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Marlin lever action is one of the iconic firearms in American history. Strong, durable, and robust, it will take any abuse the shooter or hunter can dish out. Its time-tested design continues to keep on ticking, no matter the conditions and pack a useful wallop once employed. Manufactured in 2007, this is an early 308MX, the same year the cartridge was introduced. The .308 MX cartridge was developed between Marlin and Hornady on Hornady’s LeveRevolution line, an attempt to give similar ballistics to the .308 Winchester in a lever-friendly package.
