Manufactured by Carl Gustafs Stads Gevärsfaktori in Sweden, the M96 was adopted by the Swedish military in 1896 and remained in service for several decades. The design of the Model 1896 is based on the Mauser Gewehr 1893, a German rifle, but incorporates several modifications to suit Swedish requirements. Chambered in 6.5x55mm Swedish, the rifle is known for its excellent ballistic performance, offering a flat trajectory and manageable recoil. The 6.5x55mm cartridge, combined with the rifle’s long barrel—typically 29.1 inches—contributes to its renowned accuracy. One of the standout features of the Carl Gustaf Mauser M96 is its high-quality construction. Swedish steel, known for its superior properties, was used extensively in the rifle’s manufacture. The action is smooth and reliable, with a straight bolt handle that distinguishes it from other Mauser models. The receiver is marked with the crown and the manufacturer’s name, adding to its historical appeal. The Carl Gustaf Mauser M96 was also highly regarded in civilian markets. Its accuracy and build quality made it a popular choice for hunting and target shooting. Many surplus M96 rifles were sold to civilians, where they continued to be prized for their precision and craftsmanship.
