Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore but there are some spots of stubborn fouling. In my opinion, this bore is 10 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 98% of its metal finish. There are a few freckles of discoloration on the slide toward the front. The barrel shows light operational wear. Otherwise, there are only light handling marks. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The pistol has a magazine disconnect. The slide has an ambidextrous decocker/safety. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes in a one-piece blue cardboard Smith & Wesson box with a serial matching label and a 9-round magazine.
Our Assessment: The S&W 1006 is the 10mm pistol developed by Smith & Wesson for the FBI’s request for a new pistol following a shootout in Miami in 1986. The 10mm was designed by Col. Jeff Cooper to be more powerful and flatter shooting than the .45 ACP. It is primarily used for rural law enforcement, personal defense and hunting. Until the FBI’s request, it had almost become an obsolete cartridge, popular with hand-loaders and recoil junkies. After the request, there was renewed interest, though the FBI eventually dropped the 10mm in favor of the lower-recoil .40 S&W cartridge. This example of the 1006 is in Excellent condition, appearing to have spent more time in its box than out. The included box says “USED” on the label so we think that this was either taken to a gun show or bought back and resold by S&W. No matter the case, this is a sharp pistol that would make a good defense gun, especially if you’re hiking out in bear country, and would be a fine addition to any collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
Some are hot, some are not, but thankfully most can be shot!
