Barrel Length: 24″

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed to a hooded, textured, ramped base fixed to the front of the barrel. There is a boss at the rear of the barrel which has a dovetail currently filled with a blank. The top of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled on the bridge and the chamber ring. The left-rear of the receiver is drilled and tapped with a Williams receiver sight installed, adjustable for windage and elevation. The sight is intended for the Model 70 and did not require modification of the stock or receiver.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece hand checkered walnut with a pistol grip, straight comb, sling swivels front and rear, and a checkered blued steel shotgun-style buttplate. The stock has some scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches with more notable marks on the left below the receiver sight. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 5/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has minor wear at the heel and toe with well defined checkering. Overall, the stock is in Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. The action shows light operational wear. There is a line of light wear behind the rear sight boss from a previously installed elevator sight. The bolt knob has handling wear. The trigger guard has a few light marks. There are infrequent tiny spots of very minor oxidation, mostly on the floorplate and bolt body. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the rear of the bolt. Pulled to the rear, the safety is ON, locking both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 Standard Rifle chambered for the classic .270 cartridge and made in 1954. The rifle appears to have seen responsible use in the field, retaining about 96% of its metal finish with light wear in the stock, a great bore and strong mechanics. It comes equipped with a Williams receiver sight, but no modifications were necessary to mount the sight and the rifle could easily be returned to factory configuration with a couple of fill screws and the proper rear sight. Ammunition for this rifle is typically readily available in a variety of loadings and makes for a wonderful hunting rifle. Whether you’re looking to add to your Winchester collection or just want a great hunting rifle, this will be a great gun to add to any safe in America. Please see our photos and good luck!
