Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number and “Remington / MODEL 40-X”. The left side of the chamber is marked “222 Rem 244ND”. The bolt is hand inscribed “48693”.

Sights / Optics: There is no provision for iron sights on the barrel. The left rear of the receiver has a pair of drilled, tapped, and filled holes. The top of the receiver is installed with a pair of bases and rings holding a Leupold 36x scope. The scope has some little nicks, scratches, and scuffs. There are some scattered handling marks. The scope has a finely dotted crosshair and the glass is clear, it rates in about Very Good condition
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is smooth walnut with a pistol grip, fluted straight comb, and with a serrated rubber Pachmayr buttpad. A bedding job has been done. There was inletting on the bottom of the forend for a rail but it has been filled with epoxy. There are some scattered light handling marks. There are some little compressions and a few little marks through the finish, nothing major and there are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The buttpad has some light wear. The stock rates in about Fine Plus overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue & Stainless
Finish Originality: The receiver finish is original, the barrel is aftermarket, and the bolt has been touched up.
Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. There are some light handling marks on the barrel. The receiver has some scattered light handling wear and few light marks. The bolt assembly has been touched up and displays mottled thinning, discoloration, and finish loss. The screwheads are sharp to tool marked with serviceable slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine condition as Custom.
Mechanics: An aftermarket trigger has been installed. The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: Introduced in 1962, the Remington 40-X series has been a staple of bench-rest shooting for more than half a century. The Remington Custom Shop produces all of the rifles in this series to ensure superior performance. This example has been further customized by a previous owner and would make a great rifle for someone looking to get into precision shooting. This one is chambered for .222 Remington, has a great bore, and has a nice walnut stock.
