Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “MARLIN FIRE-ARMS CO. NEW-HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. / PATENTED OCT. 11. 1887. APRIL 2. 1889. AUGUST. 1. 1893” and “30-30” at the receiver. The left shoulder of the barrel next to the rear sight is marked “SPECIAL SMOKELESS STEEL”.  The top of the receiver is marked “MARLIN SAFETY”. The upper tang is marked “MODEL / 1893”. The bottom of the receiver is marked with the serial number “113176”. The base of the rear sight is marked “MARBLES / GLADSTONE / MICH, U.S.A.”. The front sight is marked “LYMAN”.

Barrel Length: 26? Octagonal

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a Lyman brass beaded blade that is dovetailed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a semi-buckhorn with a U-notch leaf that can be reversed to present a V-notch. The leaf has a white diamond aim reference. The upper tang is drilled, tapped, and filled in two places for the installation of a tang sight (not included).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth walnut with a capped forearm, straight grip, straight comb, and a crescent steel buttplate. The wood shows scattered compressions, draglines, dings, and scratches throughout. The wood has darkened throughout. The buttstock is shy of the plate at the toe. There are no visible chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttplate shows scattered erosion and scabbing throughout. The stocks rate in about Very Good overall condition as Antique.

Bore Condition: The bore is slightly bright with erosion throughout and some light pitting. The rifling is rounded yet well defined.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 20% of its current metal finish. There is considerable thinning on all leading edges. The case coloring has gone completely mute. The finish on the barrel shows a transition to a deep dark patina. The mag tube and forearm cap show a light mottled patina. There is surface oxidation throughout the metal with some scabbing on the lever. There are several scattered dings, little impacts, and scratches. The screw heads range from lightly tool marked to slightly disfigured with serviceable slots. The markings are legible. Overall, this gun rates in about Good-Plus condition as Antique.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is slight play between the barrel and receiver. The hammer has a half-cock safety position. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: One of the most popular Marlin lever-action models, over one million Model 1893 rifles were made. This is the first rifle Marlin designed for, then new, smokeless powder cartridges. Marlin christened the improved lever-action Model 1893, and offered it as a rifle or a saddle-ring carbine, both featuring case hardened receivers and sporting blued Ballard match-grade barrels. This is a takedown rifle variation of the Model 1893. In 1895, Marlin began chambering its Model 1893 for smokeless powder cartridges. This example was manufactured in 1894. This would make for a good restoration candidate given its respectable bore and strong mechanics. Please see our photos and good luck!
