Model: 43M or 1943 Mannlicher. This is the Hungarian version of the Hungarian contract G98/40 Infantry Rifle (German Gewehr 98/40).

Markings: There is no visible import mark. The top of the receiver is marked “43M”. The left side of the barrel shank, bottom metal (twice with no letter prefix), base of the bolt handle, underside of the rear sight (no letter prefix) and the rear of the buttplate (large) are each marked with the serial number. The barrel shank is marked with a “crown / shield” acceptance stamp, “circled E” and “7 93” . The safety lever is marked “Ny” (open) on the right and “Z” (closed) on the left.
Barrel Length: Approximately 23 ¾ Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is an inverted “V” post set under a protective hood. The rear sight is a “V” notched blade attached to a sliding escalator marked from “1-20”.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The hardwood stock has a pistol grip, nosecap with bayonet stud, barrel band with sling bar, sling bar on the wrist, 2 sling loops and a metal buttplate. The buttplate and stock hardware show scrapes, scratches and discoloration from both oxidation and a lacquer coating. The stock shows several scrapes, small scratches & handling marks. Many have damaged small portions of the surface wood. The LOP measures 13 3/8 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Original. The metal has been coated with lacquer.
Bore Condition: The grooves are gray and the rifling is deep. There is erosion in the bore; more prominent in the grooves.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. The metal has been coated with lacquer. The metal shows discoloration from both oxidation and from the lacquer finish. The metal shows scrapes, small scratches and thinning on the leading edges of the metal. The screw heads show heavy use. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This Rare Hungarian 43M (1943 Mannlicher) is the Hungarian version of the contract G98/40 Infantry Rifle (German Gewehr 98/40). It was made by Fémáru Fegyver és Gépgyár (FEG) in Budapest sometime between 1943 and 1945. It is over 75 years old and still looks pretty good for its age. It has deep markings on the metal that include matching part numbers on the barrel, bottom metal, bolt handle, rear sight and buttplate. This FEG 43M will make a nice addition to a WWII collection.
