Markings: The left side of the slide is marked “5793m”, “STEYR1916?, at the rear with “K”, and a large “S”. The left side of the trigger guard is marked “5793m”. The left side of the frame, the slide release, and the left side of the lanyard loop are marked with “K”. The right side of the frame is marked “w n” and “16” with a Habsburg eagle between on the right trigger guard bow. The “16” has been overstamped with a re-acceptance stamp by the post WWI Austrian Army Administration. The bottom-rear barrel lug is marked “7705x”. The top of the follower is marked “K”. The right side of the frame under the slide is marked “381”. The left side of the lanyard loop is marked “169” and the right side is unit marked “JR6” for the KaiserJager Regiment, also Tiroler Kaiser Jaeger Regiment.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade dovetailed into the front of the slide. The rear sight is a “V”-notch in the rear of the slide between its grasping ears.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered wood panels with smooth borders. The grips show handling wear with some scattered light nicks, dings, and scuffs. There are small losses on the top of the right panels. The left panel does not properly secure to the frame and always displays slight play to the frame. There is more wear in the checkering on the right pianel. There are no cracks. Overall, the grips are in Good condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is somewhat bright with sharp rifling. There is erosion scattered through the bore.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 78% of its current metal finish. The balance is mostly in scattered minor surface oxidation. There is thinning at the leading edges and most notably on the grip straps. There are scattered light nicks, dings, and scratches. There are notable thinned spots on the front strap, the right side of the frame, and top of the slide. There is a long notable scratch on the bottom of the frame. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads are tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this pistol is in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly and the slide is tight to the frame with very slight play. The trigger is a little heavy, but breaks crisply. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: Borrowing features from both the Roth-Steyr 1907 and the Colt 1900-1911 series of pistols, the Steyr M1912 is a rotating-locking barrel, internal magazine semi-automatic pistol. The pistol is frequently referred to as the Steyr-Hahn or “Steyr Hammer” due to its external hammer. The pistol was an Austro-Hungarian sidearm during WWI with other contracts for sales to Chile and Romania. This example was produced in 1916. The pistol is in Very Good condition with 78% of its finish remaining, a fair bore and strong mechanics. Please see our photos and good luck!
