Markings: There is no visible import mark. The top of the receiver has had its “chrysanthemum” (the Imperial ownership seal) removed. The top of the receiver is still marked with three Japanese characters that translate to “99 Type”. The left side of the receiver is marked (from left to right) with the “5th series” symbol, the serial number and with the symbol for Nagoya Arsenal. There is a line on the left of the barrel shank that matches a line on the receiver. The bottom of the bayonet lug, bottom of the safety, firing pin, extractor and the bottom of the bolt handle are all marked with the last three digits of the serial number. The rear of the safety has decorative metal work on it. The left side of the receiver is marked “SAMSEL”; added by a previous owner.
The base of the Type 30 bayonet blade is marked with the symbol for the Kokura Arsenal “stacked cannonballs” and “M with an arrow through it”.

Barrel Length: Approximately 25 ½ Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is an inverted “V” post set between two protective ears. The rear sight ladder has a fixed aperture when down and a sliding aperture when flipped up. The ladder is marked from “3 – 15”. The sides fold out to be used as anti-aircraft sights. They are marked “2” in the middle and “3” on the ends. There are inverted “V” notches on each side of the AA sights.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The hardwood stock has a pistol grip, finger grooves, nosecap with bayonet lug, barrel band with monopod base, 2 sling loops, through bolt and a metal buttplate. The buttplate and stock hardware have been coated with lacquer. The show scrapes which have removed areas of the lacquer finish. The buttplate also shows discoloration from oxidation. The bottom front of the forearm and top of the handguard show repaired cracks. The wood shows scrapes & scratches. Most are small or light but a few are more notable. The LOP measures 12 1/2 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus o Fine overall condition as refinished.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Original. The metal has been coated with lacquer.
Bore Condition: The grooves are semi bright and the polygonal rifling is deep. There is some intermittent light erosion near the muzzle.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 85% of its current metal finish. The metal has been coated in lacquer. The metal shows several scrapes & scratches which have removed much of the lacquer finish. The top of the receiver shows tool marks where the mum was removed. The barrel shows surface erosion. The receiver shows oxidation. The screw heads show heavy use. The remaining markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
The bayonet mounts the rifle.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a “Mid War” Type 30 Bayonet & Scabbard. The bayonet blade shows scrapes & light thinning. The handle shows scrapes & light surface erosion on the metal as well as scratches & compression marks on the wood. The Bayonet is in Very Good Plus condition. The metal scabbard shows scrapes, light surface erosion and several small deep dents & scratches. It is in Good to Very Good condition.
Our Assessment: This Japanese Type 99 Arisaka was made by the Nagoya Arsenal between 1939 and 1943. It is over 75 years old and still looks like it can still do serious work out at the range. The chrysanthemum has been defaced but the remaining markings are deep. The markings include matching part numbers. It is very common for the Mum to be damaged or removed from Arisakas, as Mums were systematically ground off after the Japanese surrender. These weapons were also destroyed in large numbers after the Japanese surrender. This one has had its wood refinished and comes with a “Mid War” Type 30 bayonet & scabbard. It will add to your Military or WWII collection.
