Our Assessment: This is a Remington Sportsman 48, an improved version of the Model 11, which was designed by the legendary John Moses Browning. The Sportsman Monicker carried over from the Model 11 and the Sportsman 48 is the three round version of the 11-48. This shotgun was made in 1954 and retains the long-recoil operating system of the Auto-5 with the now familiar receiver shape of the later models 870 and 1100. A common workhorse field gun, Remington made about 275000 of the Sportsman 48 in total but also made special editions for those with a discerning eye who wanted something fancier than the standard offerings. This one is a Model D Tournament Model with 30″ vent rib barrel, checkered walnut stocks, and most notably scroll engraving. The blank receiver sides are the perfect canvas for engraing and all of Remington’s standard inspection marks are moved below the stock line for a very clean and elegant look. The work is beautiful and this shotgun looks amazing, it is in great shape and would be a great addition to just about any collection no matter if your area of interest is engraved guns, shotguns, or Remingtons. Please see our pictures and good luck!
