Markings: There is no visible import mark. The top of the receiver is marked “AL”. The right side of the receiver is marked with a Belgian “* / L” proof and with a Belgian proof that resembles an “arrow”. The left side of the receiver, the left side of the top cover, left side of the bolt, and the rear of the bolt carrier are each marked with the serial number. The left side of the receiver is marked “flaming bomb”, “2”, and “FABRIQUE NATIONALE D’ARMES DE GUERRE-HERSTAL-BELGIQUE”. The top of the gas tube cap is marked “A”. The belly of the stock is marked with a “circle containing script letters”.

Barrel Length: Approximately 23 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a bladed post set between two protective ears. The rear sight is an aperture tangent sight marked from “1-10”.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The two piece hardwood stock has a pistol grip, finger grooves, metal nosecaps, barrel band, two sling loops, and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage in the butt. The buttplate and stock hardware show scrapes, scratches and discoloration from oxidation. The wood shows numerous scrapes, scratches, and compression marks. Several have damaged small areas of the surface wood. Most of these marks have been oiled. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Black Gun Paint

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The lands are semi bright, the grooves are gray, and the rifling is deep. There is erosion present; mostly in the grooves. The bore shows an M.E. of 0.5.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 85% of its metal finish. The metal shows numerous scrapes & scratches. Several have removed areas of the black paint finish. The exposed areas of the metal show discoloration from oxidation. The screw heads show use. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cocking indicator is located at the bottom front of the trigger guard. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a magazine that shows several scrapes & scratches that have removed portions of the finish. The exposed metal shows discoloration from oxidation. It is in about Very Good condition.

Our Assessment: This Rare Luxembourg contract FN 49 was produced in .30-06. It is estimated that less than 10,000 were produced in this contract. The rifle has nice markings that include matching numbers on the parts and “AL” (Armee Luxembourg) on the receiver. This FN 49 will add to your Military collection and should be lots of fun out at the range.
