The original serial number is in Arabic. The Arabic symbols (serial number) on the receiver, bolt handle, and stock are matching.

Year of Manufacture: 1931 to 1938. Page 282 of Robert Ball’s book, Mauser Military Rifles of the World 5th Edition.

Action Type: Bolt Action, Internal Magazine

Markings: The import mark under the barrel reads “SAMCO / M98/29 CZECH 7.92MM”. The new serial number on the left side of the receiver was added by the importer.
The remaining markings are in Farsi. Translation and information is taken from pages 240-245 of Joe Puleo’s book, Bolt Action Military Rifles of the World.
The top of the receiver is marked with the Persian crest “crown / sun / lion holding a sword”. The left side of the receiver is marked with the Persian serial number in “Arabic numbers” followed by an Arabic “letter” and, “Rifle Model 1309 BRNO Arms Factory”. The Iranian year “1309” corresponds to the Western model year of 1929, as this is a 1929 contract rifle. The right side of the receiver and the underside of the bolt handle knob are both stamped with Persian acceptance marks. The top of the bolt handle and right side of the buttstock are marked with the Persian serial number in “Arabic numbers” followed by an Arabic “letter”. The right side of the buttstock is also marked “Infantry”. The bottom of the bolt handle is marked “M 8” and with a Czech “circled Z” proof. The left side of the butt is marked “E.S.” and with “1 70 in a circle”. The top of the grip is marked “22”.

Barrel Length: Approximately 29 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is an inverted “V” post set between two protective ears that were milled as part of the barrel. The rear sight is a “V” notched blade attached to a sliding escalator assembly marked from “1 – 20” in Arabic.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The two piece hardwood stock has a pistol grip, finger grooves, metal nose cap with bayonet lug, hole for the included cleaning rod, stacking loop, barrel band, 2 sling loops, through bolt, marking disk on the butt, and a metal buttplate. The buttplate shows scrapes & scratches. The barrel band & nosecap have been treated with cold blue. Surface erosion shows through the cold blue. They show scrapes & discoloration. The wood shows numerous scrapes, scratches & compression marks. Several have damaged small portions of the surface wood. The wood also shows areas of discoloration.  The LOP measures 13 ? inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original. The metal has been treated with cold blue.

Bore Condition: The muzzle and the grooves near the muzzle are light gray. The remaining lands are bright. The remaining grooves are semi bright. The rifling is deep. There is erosion at the muzzle and in the grooves near the muzzle

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 94% of its metal finish. The metal has been treated with cold blue. The top of the barrel has an area of surface erosion showing through the cold blue. The left rear of the receiver has oxidation bleeding through the cold blue. The bottom metal has small scratches and oxidation showing through the cold blue finish. The metal shows scuffs, scrapes, and light handling marks. The screw heads show heavy use. The markings are deep & crisp. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with an unmarked leather sling. It shows scrapes and discoloration. The metal shows oxidation. It is in about Very Good Plus condition. 

Our Assessment: This Persian Model 98/29 Long Rifle looks impressive. It has nice deep markings on the metal & wood. The markings include a large crisp Persian crest on the receiver. The original serial number is in Arabic. The Arabic symbols for the serial number on the receiver, bolt handle, and stock are matching.
The rifle was made by the Czechs at their famous Brno factory between 1931 and 1938. The orders for these Mausers were not completed as the Nazis took over Czechoslovakia prior to all rifles being made. The Czech made Persian Model 98/29 Long Rifle is considered to be one of the best Military Mausers ever made. This will add to your Military collection.
