It appears some of the original markings remain concealed from when the rifle was refinished with only a few cartouches and barrel marking visible. The screwheads have tool marks but remain serviceable. Overall, the refinished rifle is in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box Paperwork and Accessories: None
Our Assessment: This customized Rolling Block is a single-shot rifle chambered for .50-70 Government rounds. The rifle’s origin is hard to pinpoint because most of its markings are concealed. The typical patent stamp found on the Remington and Whitney made rifles top tangs has worn off making identification increasingly difficult. The barrel bands are all different, the barrel does not appear to be original and the stocks are also likely not original to the gun. It has the Wrendl style rear sight used on the Argentino variant, but Argentinos have octagonal chambers and bayonet lugs on the barrels. The rifle appears to have a type 2 action which was in production between circa 1867-1871, more precise dating is difficult due to the lack of markings. This customized rifle remains mechanically sound and should prove a fun addition to any arsenal. Good luck on your bid!
