Action Type: Semi Auto, Detachable Magazine

Markings: There is no import mark. The top of the receiver is marked “U.S. CARBINE / CAL. .30 M1” on the front and “WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK / 6524587” on the rear. The top of the barrel is marked with a Winchester “PW in an oval” proof mark. The Winchester “W” stamping has been lost. The right side of the barrel is marked with a “flaming bomb” just above the gas piston. The right rear of the trigger group is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 78  of Craig Riesch’s book, U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production 7th Edition) and the bottom is marked “A”. The hammer is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 89-90) and “S” on the opposite side. The magazine release is marked “M” and “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 100-101). The smooth push button safety is marked “ “EW” ” which is a Winchester mark (pages 95). The inside of the operating slide is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 65). The right bolt lug is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 36). The front sight is unmarked which is consistent with Winchester and others (page 56). The Type I rear sight is marked “S” which was used by Winchester and others (page 29). The Type IA barrel band is marked “U” which was used by Inland and National Postal Meter (page 59). The inside of the handguard is marked”W” which is a Winchester mark (page 138). The sling well is marked with a small “flaming bomb” and “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 108 – 109). The top of the recoil plate is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 135). The recoil plate screw is marked “x” which is a Winchester mark (page 133).

Barrel Length: Approximately 18 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a post set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a Type I flip up, dual aperture assembly.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The wood stock has a pistol grip, Type IA barrel band with sling loop, sling well, sling pass through, and a metal buttplate. The buttplate shows small scratches, discoloration and pin prick surface erosion. The wood shows numerous scrapes, scratches, and compression marks. Most of the marks are on the handguard. Many of the marks have damaged small portions of the surface wood. Most of these marks have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore semi bright; light grey near the muzzle. The rifling is sharp. There is fouling, frosting, and a freckling of light erosion near the muzzle. The fouling should clean up some.The bore shows an M.E. of 1.2.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 80% of its metal finish as refinished. The receiver has surface erosion and pitting showing through the new finish. The metal shows scrapes, small scratches, and areas of discoloration from oxidation. The barrel and trigger group show areas of light thinning under the wood. The front of the barrel shows a ring of heavy surface erosion. The right side of the receiver shows light thinning consistent with cycling. Some of the markings on the barrel & receiver are faded.  Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition as refinished.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: There is No magazine. The rifle comes with a green canvas sling that is in about Fine condition.

Our Assessment: This Winchester M1 Carbine was made back in 1945. It has since been rebuilt and refinished. The rifle has seen some use but uses almost all Winchester parts. The barrel band is a replacement and not a Winchester part. This M1 Carbine should be lots of fun at the range. Good luck.
