Markings: The import mark on the barrel reads “BLUE SKY/ARLINGTON, VA.” The top of the receiver is marked “U.S. CARBINE / CAL. 30 M1” on the front and “INLAND DIV. / 3172525” on the rear. The left front of the receiver is marked “SG” under the woodline. This is a Saginaw SG mark (page 19 of Craig Riesch’s book, U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production 7th Edition). The top of the barrel is faintly marked “INLAND MFD. DIV. / GENERAL MOTORS”. The other barrel markings have been lost. The right rear of the trigger group is marked “INLAND” which is an Inland mark (page 78). The Type III hammer is unmarked which is consistent with a post WWII rebuild part (page 89 & 185). The magazine release is marked “cc / M” which is a post WWII rebuild mark (pages 100-101). The rotary safety is marked “M inside a C” which is a post WWII rebuild mark (page 95 & 185). The inside of the operating slide is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 65). The bolt is marked “I” and “AI” on the left lug which is an Inland mark (page 36). The front sight is unmarked which is consistent with Inland and others (page 56). The Type II rear sight is marked “H in a shield” which was used by a few other manufacturers (page 29). The Type II barrel band is marked “AMCO” (faded) which is a post WWII rebuild mark (page 59). The interior of the new production handguard is unmarked. This is not a USGI part (page 138). The top edge of the forearm is marked “S A” which is a post WWII rebuild mark (page 108-109). The rear of the magazine is marked “U” which is listed as a miscellaneous mark (page 142 -143).
Barrel Length: Approximately 18 Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a post set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a Type II adjustable aperture assembly.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock has a pistol grip, Type II barrel band with sling loop, sling well, sling pass through, and a metal buttplate. The new production handguard is a replacement. The buttplate and stock hardware show small scratches, surface erosion,and a brown patina. The wood shows several scrapes & scratches. Some have damaged small portions of the surface wood. These marks have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.
Type of Finish: Parkerized
Finish Originality: Original to Rebuild
Bore Condition: The muzzle and grooves are grey. The rifling is well defined; shallow at the muzzle. There is fouling and erosion in the grooves and at the muzzle. The fouling should clean up some. The bore shows an M.E. of 4.2.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 20% of its metal finish. Most of the finish has been lost. Much of the metal shows a brown patina. The rear of the barrel retains most of the remaining blue finish. The metal shows scrapes, scratches, discoloration from oxidation, and areas of light surface erosion. The right side of the receiver shows light thinning consistent with cycling. Most of the markings are well defined. The barrel markings are faded. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a 15 round magazine. It shows scrapes, small scratches, and a freckling of oxidation. It is in about Very Good condition.
The 15 round magazine is not available to residents of California or any other state with magazine capacity restrictions.
Our Assessment: Our Assessment: This Inland M1 Carbine was made back in 1944. After WWII it served in a U.S. friendly country and was eventually imported back into the U.S. The rifle has seen some use but it has a Rare Saginaw SG marking on the receiver. The receiver was subcontracted to Saginaw SG and is marked “SG” under the woodline. This M1 Carbine can fill both the Underwood and Saginaw SG slots in your M1 Carbine collection.
