Action Type: This rifle has a lever action with a full-length tubular magazine.
Markings: The left of the barrel is marked “MADE IN NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S. OF AMERICA / -WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL-”, -“WINCHESTER / -TRADE MARK-“-, “MODEL 94 – 30-30 WIN.-”. The top of the barrel and top of the chamber ring are each marked with a circled “WP” proof. The underside of the receiver is marked “1916019”.
Barrel Length: 20″, Round
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed to a hooded, textured, ramped base forged to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a “U”-notch leaf and elevator sight dovetailed to the rear of the barrel. The notch is fine adjustable for elevation.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are 2-piece smooth walnut with banded forend, straight grip, straight comb, and checkered steel buttplate. There is a hole in the belly for a sling stud, but no stud is present. There is also a stud mount on the magazine tube, but it is missing its stud. The stud would otherwise act as an indexing/set screw, so the stud mount on the magazine tube is loose and can slide back and forth. The stocks have scattered nicks, scuffs and scratches, most in the buttstock, and general light handling wear. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has erosion on the right edge toward the heel. The checkering is well defined. The plate has a slight gap at the toe. Overall, the stocks are in Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. Our gauge shows an ME of about 0.75.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 92% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at most edges. There are a few scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches. There is infrequent minor finish wear. The balance is mostly in scattered minor surface oxidation, primarily in the receiver. The action shows light operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good-plus condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer has a half-cock safety and the lever safety functions properly. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None
Our Assessment: This is a Winchester Model 94 Carbine in .30-30 made in 1953. The .30-30 is perhaps the most popular deer cartridge in America, and the 94 chambered for this classic round is nearly synonymous with “deer rifle”. This rifle is in Very Good-plus condition with 92% of its metal finish remaining, a great bore and strong mechanics. It shows wear consistent with use in the field over the years and proper maintenance. This pre-1964 vintage rifle should be of interest to collectors and could be back out in the field dropping deer for another lifetime. Please see our photos and good luck!
