Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “REMINGTON ARMS CO. INC., ILION, N.Y. MADE IN U.S.A. / PATENT NO. 2,685,754 – 2,585,195 – 2,747,313 / 2,675,638 – 2,473,373 AND OTHERS”, “6MM. REM. XXX”, and “5AKS”. The left side of the barrel is marked with magnaflux, proof, and test marks. The left of the receiver is marked “Remington / Woodmaster / MODEL 742 / 103500″ and features a scene of a bear running through a wooded area. The right side of the receiver is marked with a scene of a buck prancing through a wooded area. The bottom of the receiver is hand inscribed “RGg”.

Barrel Length: 22”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade dovetailed into a serrated ramped base set on the barrel. The rear sight is a “U” notch with a white triangle underneath, an elevator, and is set on a ramped base that is fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is adjustable for windage and elevation. The top of the receiver is installed with a one-piece rail and a pair of rings holding a Bushnell Banner 3x-9x scope. The scope has some scattered little nicks and a few little scuffs. The scope has a crosshair and the glass is clear, it rates in about Fine condition.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are a two-piece checkered wood set with a fluted straight comb. There are some scratches and little light scrapes through the finish. There are some scattered compressions. There are a few dings through the finish and into the wood. The checkering is mostly strong but there are some scrapes and compressions. There are some areas of finish loss. The LOP measures 13 3/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the checkered alloy Remington buttplate. The buttplate has some scattered little scuffs, finish loss to the peaks, and some light compressions. The stocks rate in about Very Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. There are a few scratches on the receiver, mostly on the top at the rear. There is thinning on the edges. The receiver has some areas of thinning with some faint patina, most noticeable on the bottom at the front. There are a few little spots of dried oil and some spots of frost. The barrel has a few scattered spots of oxidation. There are some scuffs and a few light scratches on the receiver, most noticeable towards the front. There are some dings into the muzzle on the outer circumference of the muzzle. There are some light handling marks and standard operational wear. The pinheads are unmarred and the screwheads have light wear. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards. The magazine was a little difficult to remove at first, but eventually came free and seems to work fine.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Included is a leather sling marked “REMINGTON”, two 4-round magazines, a bore snake, and the previously described scope.

Our Assessment: The Remington 742 Woodsmaster was made from 1960 to 1980, as a reliable and easy to point semi-automatic rifle with removable magazines, this item was made in 1963 and has about 90% of the blue finish remains. The stocks have some cosmetic damages, but no chips or cracks, and the action functions correctly. We think that this one is chambered for 6mm Remington, but you will want to cast the chamber to confirm, some of the caliber markings are struck out.
