Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number at the breech and “Remington / MODEL 700” at the midsection. The left side of the barrel is marked “REMINGTON ARMS CO. INC., ILION, N.Y. MADE IN U.S.A.” above a host of patent numbers followed by “.222 REM.”. The right side of the chamber is marked “CS 30” and has an inspection mark. The right side of the barrel is marked with magnaflux, proof, and test marks at the breech. The bottom of the bolt is matched and hand-marked “3705”.

Barrel Length: 24” Heavy

Sights / Optics: The barrel has no provision for a front sight. The rear of the barrel is drilled and tapped for use with a Model 40XB target rifle style base. The top of the receiver has a pair of drilled, tapped, and filled holes at the front and an empty pair of drilled and tapped holes at the rear. The left rear of the receiver has a pair of drilled, tapped, and filled holes.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is press checkered wood with black caps, white spacers, reinforcing pin on the left, and a fluted Monte Carlo comb with a cheekpiece. There are a few little scuffs, minor compressions, and some light draglines. Some of the most noticeable marks are on the left side at the trigger. There are some light handling marks. The checkering is intact and strong. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures approximately 13 1/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the checkered black hard rubber Remington buttplate which displays some light wear mainly at the heel and toe. The stock rates in about Fine overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 92% of its metal finish. There are some light marks on the receiver. There are a couple of little spots of oxidation on the receiver. There is some light wear on the bolt handle. The barrel has some scuffs, draglines, hairline scratches, and a couple of nicks, mostly towards the front. There are some spots of oxidation on the barrel towards the front. The screw heads are lightly worn. The main markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good-Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Remington 700 needs no introduction. It has been one of the most popular bolt action rifles in America for decades, seeing use in target shooting, hunting, and in law enforcement and has been produced in just about any caliber and configuration you could think of. This one is the BDL Varmint Special model. It has a hinged floorplate, press checkered wood stock, heavy barrel, and is drilled and tapped at the rear of the barrel for a 40XB style scope base. This example is chambered in .222 Remington and would make a great varminting or target shooting rifle. This is a classic Remington rifle in a classic caliber and looks like it has hardly seen any use! Please see our photos and good luck!
