Our Assessment: This Remington Rolling Block is either a type 1 or 2, conversion from a muzzle-loader which is a single-shot rifle which takes .58 centerfire rounds. The rifle was likely part of a contract to Texas or South Carolina based on its features. The South Carolina rolling blocks generally had some markings indicating they belonged to the state’s national guard, which makes it less likely to be from the South Carolina contract. The Texas rolling blocks are difficult to identify as there are no examples of uniform markings that can be attributed to them, and this rifle may very well have been an unmarked Texas contract rolling block. This was definitely an early production rolling block: the top-tang marking was from the type 1 and 2 conversions of Civil War-era surplus muzzle-loaders and the rear sight is from the Civil War-era, typical of both South Carolina and Texas contract rolling blocks. This rifle was manufactured sometime between 1870-1871 and is an Antique. This is an interesting old rifle that you do not want to miss out on!
