Markings: There is no visible import mark. The gas cylinder lock screw is marked “HRA” which is a Harrington & Richardson (H&R) part (page 115 of Joe Poyer’s M1 GARAND 1936 to 1957, 6th Edition).
Receiver: “U.S. RIFLE / CAL. .30 M1 / H. & R. ARMS CO. / 5663228”
Trigger Group: “6528290—HRA N”- Correct for the H&R serial number (page 90).
Hammer: “HRA 5546008”– Correct for the H&R serial number (page 99).
Safety: “HRA” – Correct for the H&R serial number (page 104).
Follower: unmarked – Correct for the H&R serial number (page 83).
Receiver Leg: “Y” and “6528291” – Correct for a 1954 H&R M1 (page 30).
Op Rod: “6535382 HRA” – Correct for the H&R serial number (page 71).
Bolt: “6528287 HRA / .U.”- Appears correct for the H&R serial number (page 53).
Barrel: “HRA D6535448 6-54 RS34”, “M”, “P” (twice), and with a Defense “Eagle” acceptance stamp – Correct for an H&R barrel (page 64).
The stock and sights are described below.

Barrel Length: Approximately 24 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight set between two protective wings. The windage knob is marked “LEFT arrow” twice and “HRA-W”. The elevation knob is marked from “2-12” in increments of two and “HR A”. These are H&R rear sight markings (page 39-40).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The bottom of the grip is marked with “circled P” proof. The left side of the stock above the trigger is with a Defense “Eagle” acceptance stamp which is correct for an M1 stock made after Sept./Oct. 1953 (page 129-130).
The oil stained hardwood stock has a pistol grip, metal nosecaps, stacking loop, two sling loops, and a metal buttplate with hinged metal door for storage in the buttstock. The stock shows several scrapes, scratches & compression marks. Many have damaged small portions of surface wood. These marks have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is deep. There is no erosion. The bore shows an M.E. of 1.2. The throat shows a T.E. of 2.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The gas tube assembly and trigger guard show scrapes & small scratches. The metal shows other light handling marks. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements
Excess cosmoline will need to be cleaned off the rifle and out of the action.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a CMP Certificate of Authenticity, owners manual & paperwork, “CMP” marked chamber flag, and one clip.
The certificate is marked “M1 GARAND CORRECT GRD” (Correct Grade) and with the rifle’s serial number. The name is blacked out. It shows soiling and creasing. Overall it is in about Very Good Plus condition.
The manual, paperwork, chamber flag, and clip are in about Fine condition.
The rifle and accessories come in the original shipping box from the CMP. The shipping markings include “CIVILIAN MARKSMANSHIP PROGRAM” and ”ANNISTON, AL”. The interior contains 2  foam padding inserts that are soiled from cosmoline. The box shows discoloration and tape residue. Overall it is in about Very Good Plus condition.

Our Assessment: This “Correct Grade” Harrington & Richardson M1 Garand was made in 1954 and has all matching parts. It comes in a Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) Certificate of Authenticity listing the rifle as a Correct Grade M1 Garand. The CMP website states the following about Correct Grade rifles: “Correct Grade rifles will have all correct parts for the date of manufacture”.
This M1 Garand has lots of “HRA” markings on the metal parts. Even the gas cylinder lock screw and rear sights are marked “HRA”. This is a highly collectible rifle. The rifle looks great for its age and the bore is strong & bright. You will have to clean off lots of cosmoline. We cleaned up the rifle a bit to view the bore, finish, and markings. You will have to give the rifle a proper cleaning as it has been in storage for quite some time.This is a Nice Garand to add to your WWII or Military Collection.
