Markings: There is no import mark. The top of the receiver is marked “U.S. CARBINE / CAL. 30 M1” on the front and “INLAND DIV. / 732603” on the rear. The left front of the receiver is marked “SG” under the woodline. This is a Saginaw SG mark (page 19 of Craig Riesch’s book, U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production 7th Edition). The top of the barrel is marked “INLAND MFD. DIV. / GENERAL MOTORS / 5 – 43” and “P” (under the barrel band). The right rear of the trigger group is marked “INLAND” which is an Inland mark (page 78). The trigger guard still has tape on it from a “CMP” match. The hammer is marked “WU” which is an Underwood mark (page 89). The magazine release is marked “M” and “HI” which is an Inland mark (pages 100-101). The rotary safety is marked “M inside a C” which is a post WWII rebuild mark (page 95 & 184). The inside of the operating slide is marked “PI” which is an Inland mark (page 65). The bolt is marked “2” and “OI” on the left lug which is an Inland mark (page 36). The front sight is unmarked which is consistent with Inland and others (page 56). The new production Type II rear sight is unmarked. This is not a USGI part (page 29). The Type III barrel band is marked “KI” which is an Inland mark (page 59). The interior of the handguard is marked “OI” which is an Inland mark (page 138). The left side of the buttstock is marked with a 1969 dated, Italian Arsenal Rebuild stamp “star / FAT / 69” (Fabbrica d’ Armi a Terni, page 194). The magazine is marked “SS-4” which is a Standard Products mark (page 142 -143). The rear of the magazine is also marked “1” on tape.
Barrel Length: Approximately 18 Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a post set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a new production Type II adjustable aperture assembly.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock has a pistol grip, Type III barrel band with sling loop & bayonet lug, sling well, sling pass through, and a metal buttplate. The buttplate shows scrapes & thinning. The handguard has a small amount of side to side play at the nosecap. The wood shows numerous scrapes, scratches and compression marks. Many have damaged small portions of the surface wood. Most of the marks have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The lands are bright and the grooves are semi bright. The grooves near the muzzle are light grey. The rifling is crisp. There is fouling and intermittent light erosion in the grooves near the muzzle. The fouling should clean up some. The bore shows an M.E. of 1.2.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. The metal shows scuffs, light scrapes, and light thinning on the leading edges of the metal. The right side of the receiver & bolt show light thinning consistent with cycling. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a 15 round magazine. It shows scrapes & small scratches. Overall it is in about Very Good Plus condition. The rifle also comes with a new production canvas sling. It is marked “sit” twice in ink. It shows soiling and discoloration. There is no oiler. A wooden dowel is used in the oilers place. It is about Very Good Plus condition.
The 15 round magazine is not available to residents of California or any other state with magazine capacity restrictions.
Our Assessment: This Inland M1 Carbine was made back in 1943. It has a rare Saginaw SG marking on the receiver. The receiver was subcontracted to Saginaw SG and is marked “SG” under the woodline. This M1 Carbine is in nice shape for a WWII service rifle. It has deep Inland markings on the barrel and receiver as well as a large Italian marking on the stock. It still has tape from a CMP shooting match on the trigger guard so it should do well out at the range.
