Markings: There is no import mark.The top of the receiver is marked “U.S. CARBINE / CAL. 30 M1” on the front and “INLAND DIV. / 51120” on the rear. The top of the barrel is marked “INLAND MFD. DIV. / GENERAL MOTORS /  8 – 42” and “P”. The right rear of the trigger group is marked “INLAND” which is an Inland mark (page 78 of Craig Riesch’s book, U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production 7th Edition). The hammer is marked “I-I” which is an Inland mark (page 89). The Type IV magazine release is marked “M” which is consistent with other manufacturers (pages 100-101). The rotary safety is marked “M inside a C” which is a post WWII rebuild mark (page 93 & 185). The inside of the operating slide is marked “N” which is a National Postal Meter mark (page 65). The bolt is marked “1” and “OI” on the left lug which is an Inland mark (page 36). The front sight is marked “N” which is consistent with Inland and others (page 56). The Type III rear sight is marked “J.A.O. / 7160060” which is a post WWII rebuild mark (page 29 & 184). The Type III barrel band is marked “JM” which is a post WWII rebuild mark (page 59 & 185). The interior of the handguard is marked with a “flaming bomb” and “OI” which are Inland marks (page 138). The sling well is marked “HI” which is an Inland mark (page 108). The right side of the buttstock is marked with a “crossed cannons” cartouche. The bottom of the grip is marked “66” and “B”. The rear of the magazines are marked “UN” which is a National Postal Meter mark and “BW” which is a Winchester mark (page 142-143). The front of the magazine pouch is marked “U.S.” and the rear is marked “HOFF / 1943”.

Barrel Length: Approximately 18 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a post set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a Type III fully adjustable aperture.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock has a pistol grip, Type III barrel band with sling loop & bayonet lug, sling well, sling pass through and a metal buttplate. The buttplate shows small scrapes. The left side of the forearm shows 2 small circular surface repairs. The wood shows several small scratches which have been finished over. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Fine overall condition as refinished.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. The bore shows an M.E. of 1.2.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 94% of its metal finish as refinished. Surface erosion shows through the new finish on the barrel & receiver. The metal shows scuffs, scrapes, and small scratches. The area below the rear sight shows scratches on both sides. The trigger group was not refinished. It shows light thinning and a freckling of oxidation. The right side of the receiver and bolt show some thinning consistent with cycling. The barrel markings are faded. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition as refinished.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with two 15 round magazines, a dual magazine pouch, and a sling. The magazines show scrapes & small scratches. They are in about Very Good Plus condition. The dual mag pouch shows some scrapes on the metal. Overall it is in about Fine condition. The sling is in about Excellent condition.
The 15 round magazines are not available to residents of California or any other state with magazine capacity restrictions.

Our Assessment: This Inland M1 Carbine was made back in 1942. Its metal and wood have been refinished so it looks good for a WWII service rifle that is almost 80 years old. The bore is still strong so it should be fun out at the range. The M1 Carbine comes with a sling, dual mag pouch, and 2 mags. Good luck.
