Markings: There is no import mark.The top of the receiver is marked “U.S. CARBINE / CAL. 30 M1” on the front and “INLAND DIV. / 6235100” on the rear. The top of the barrel is marked “INLAND MFD. DIV. / GENERAL MOTORS / 9 – 44” and “P”. The right rear of the trigger group is marked “S’G’ ” which was used by Saginaw S’G’ and Irwin-Pedersen (page 78 of Craig Riesch’s book, U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production 7th Edition). The hammer is marked “H” which is an Underwood mark (page 89). The Type IV magazine release is marked “M” which is consistent with other manufacturers (pages 100-101). The rotary safety is marked “M inside a C” which is a post WWII rebuild mark (page 93 & 185). The inside of the operating slide is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 65). The bolt is marked “AI” on the right lug which is an Inland mark (page 36). The front sight is marked “N” which is consistent with Inland and others (page 56). The Type III rear sight is marked “I.R.CO. / 7160060” which is a post WWII rebuild mark (page 29 & 184). The Type III barrel band is marked “KI” which is an Inland mark (page 59). The interior of the handguard is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 138). The sling well is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 108). The left side of the stock, above the trigger, is marked with a Rock Island Arsenal Rebuild stamp “RIA / FK in a box” (page 181). The right side of the stock is marked with a partial Winchester inspector’s cartouche “W.R.A / G.H.D” which is next to a partial “crossed cannons” cartouche. (page 123). The rear of each magazine is marked “MN” which are National Postal Meter marks (page 142-143). The front of the magazine pouch is marked “U.S.” and the rear is marked with a blurred stamping and “1943”. The exterior of the carrying case is marked “U.S.”. The interior is marked “M.-D. MFG. CO. / 1944”.

Barrel Length: Approximately 18 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a post set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a Type III fully adjustable aperture.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock has a pistol grip, Type III barrel band with sling loop & bayonet lug, sling well, sling pass through and a metal buttplate. The wood shows several scrapes and scratches which have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine overall condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original to Arsenal Rebuild

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. The bore shows an M.E. of 0.2.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 94% of its metal finish. The metal shows scuffs,  scrapes, and a few small scratches. The barrel shows discoloration from oxidation. The right side of the receiver and bolt show thinning consistent with cycling. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with two 15 round magazines, a dual magazine pouch, soft case, and a sling. The magazines show light scrapes & small scratches. They are in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition. The dual mag pouch shows discoloration on the canvas and oxidation on the metal. Overall it is in about Very Good Plus condition. The sling shows scrapes on the metal. The sling is in about Fine condition. The canvas soft case shows light discoloration and areas of soiling. It is in about Very Good Plus condition.
The 15 round magazines are not available to residents of California or any other state with magazine capacity restrictions.

Our Assessment: This Inland M1 Carbine was made back in 1945. After WWII it was Arsenal Rebuilt at the Rock Island Arsenal. It is in great shape for a WWII service rifle. It has deep Inland markings on the barrel & receiver, great looking wood, and a strong bright bore. This is a nice M1 Carbine to add to your collection or take out to the range. The rifle comes with a sling, soft case, dual mag pouch, and 2 mags.
