Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked “U.S. / MODEL 1898. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY. 441531”. The rear of the bolt handle is marked “S”. The bottom of the bolt handle is marked “7”. The barrel band is marked “U”. The bottom of the grip is marked with a faded “circled P” proof.

Barrel Length: Approximately 30 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a pinned blade set atop a raised base. The rear sight is a “V” notched blade attached to an escalator assembly. The left side of the rear sight base is marked “1 2 3 4B” for use with the escalator. The sight flips up to become a sight ladder that is marked from “1-20”.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock has a straight grip, cutout for the bolt handle, finger grooves, barrel band, nosecap with bayonet lug, stacking loop, 2 sling loops, and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage. Cleaning gear is stored in the butt. The buttplate shows scratches, discoloration from oxidation, and light surface erosion. The nosecap and barrel band shows scrapes, scratches and a brown patina. The rear of the handguard is missing a small amount of edge wood. The wood shows scrapes, scratches, and compression marks. Many have damaged small portions of the surface wood. Most of these marks have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttstock. This stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Bore Condition: The grooves are grey and the rifling is deep. There is erosion in the grooves and at the muzzle. The bore shows an M.E. of 3.

Overall Condition: This rifle has lost its metal finish to oxidation. It shows  scratches, surface erosion, and a brown patina. The screw heads show heavy use and a brown patina. The receiver markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a leather sling, brass muzzle cover, and cleaning gear. The sling shows scrapes, surface cracking, and discoloration. The sling has been cut next to the replacement connector to facilitate the installation of the connector. Overall it is in about Good condition. The muzzle cover shows scratches and oxidation. It is in about Very Good condition.  A 3 piece Krag Rifle cleaning rod and a metal Krag oil tube are stored in the butt. They show scrapes & oil residue. The rods also show oxidation. Overall the rods are in about Good condition. The oiler is in about Very Good Plus condition.

Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory Model 1898 Krag was made back in 1903. The rifle is 118 years old so it has seen some use. Luckily it still has good markings on the receiver and a bore that can still do work out at the range. It comes with a sling, muzzle cover, and cleaning gear. It will add to your Military collection.
