Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked “U.S. / MODEL 1896. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY. 78732”. The bottom of the bolt handle is marked “5”. The bottom of the grip is marked “32” and with a faded “circled P” proof. The top of the rear sight ladder is marked “C” designating it a Carbine sight.
Barrel Length: Approximately 22 Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a pinned blade atop a raised base. The rear sight is a “U” notched blade attached to a sliding escalator. The left side of the rear sight base is marked “3 4 5 6” for use with the escalator. It flips up to become a sight ladder marked from “7 -20”. The top of the sight ladder is also marked “C” designating it as a Carbine sight.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock has a straight grip, finger grooves, barrel band, sling bar & sling ring on the side, and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage. A Krag oiler is stored in the butt. The buttplate shows scrapes, small scratches, and discoloration from oxidation. The barrel band shows light discoloration and scratches. The bottom of the butt shows a small filled surface repair. The right side of the stock shows a repair between the bolt handle cutout and the receiver. The wood shows several scrapes, scratches, and compression marks. Some of the marks have damaged small areas of the surface wood. The LOP measures 13 ½ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus overall condition, as a refurbished antique.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Original. The magazine side plate has been refinished.
Bore Condition: The lands are light gray and the grooves are dark. The rifling is well defined; less pronounced at the muzzle. There is erosion throughout; more substantial in the grooves. The bore shows an M.E. of 3.2.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 30% of its metal finish. The magazine side plate has been refinished. The metal shows scrapes, small scratches, and thinning. The thinned areas of the metal show discoloration from oxidation. The screw heads show oxidation & use. The receiver markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition as an antique.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: A metal Krag oiler is stored in the butt. The cap has a dripper attached. The oiler shows soiling, oil residue, and scrapes. It is in about Very Good condition.
Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory Model 1896 Krag Carbine was made back in 1897. It is a true Krag Carbine that uses a Carbine marked rear sight. This Military Carbine is over 120 years old and still looks pretty good for its age. This 1896 Krag Carbine will add to your collection and is an antique. No FFL is required…unless you live in California.
