Our Assessment: The Remington 700 has been one of the most popular bolt action rifles in America for decades, seeing use in target shooting, hunting, and in law enforcement. This example is chambered in .458 Win. Mag., a dangerous game cartridge well suited to the African Big Five. It will take thick-skinned game such as elephants, cape buffalo, and rhinoceros but also work well against lion and leopard with the right bullets because it will not over-penetrate. Here in North America, it is suitable for bison and large bears, and while it may be overkill, many Alaskan guides use the .458 for defense against bears. This rifle has non-standard markings and does not have the Ilion address or unsightly warnings, but does have Remington factory proofs leading us to believe this is a custom shop gun. The last rifle we saw like this was a .458 and had the same configuration and markings. This is a beautiful rifle and the minimalist markings really give it a clean and elegant look. This is a proven American classic and something you definitely need if you have not added one to your arsenal yet! Please see our photos and good luck!
