Markings: There is no visible import mark. The top of the receiver is marked “U.S. CARBINE / CAL. .30 M1” on the front and “STD. PRO. / 2084945” on the rear. The left side of the receiver is marked “7 G” below the wood line. The top of the barrel is marked “UNDERWOOD / 8-44 / flaming bomb”. Underwood supplied dated barrels to Standard Products for assembly (pages 50 of Craig Riesch’s book, U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production). The left rear of the trigger group is marked “S” which is a Standard Products mark (page 78). The hammer is marked “SW” which is a Standard Products mark (page 89 – 90). The magazine release is marked “SW” which is a Standard Products mark (page 100-101). The smooth push button safety is marked “SW” which is a Standard Products mark (page 95). The inside of the operating slide is marked “circled S” which is a Standard Products mark (page 65). The bolt is marked “36S” on the right lug which is a Standard Products mark (page 36). The front sight is marked “N” which is consistent with Standard Products and others (page 56). The Type II rear sight is marked “H in a shield” which is a Standard Products mark (page 29-30). The Type IA barrel band is unmarked which is consistent with Standard Products and others (page 59). The recoil plate is marked “STANDARD / PRODUCTS” which is a Standard Products mark (page 135). The underside of the handguard is marked “S-HB” which is a Standard Products mark (page 138). The sling well is marked “7” and “S-HB” which is a Standard Products mark (page 108-109). The bottom of the grip is marked with a “circled P” proof. The buttplate is marked “S-S3” which is a Standard Products mark (page 114).
The front of the mag pouch is marked “U.S. The rear is marked “HEPBURN MFG. CO. / 1943” and “circled D”. The muzzle cover is marked “U.S.” on one side and “ROBEY TACKLE CO. / 1944” on the other.

Barrel Length: Approximately 18 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a post set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable Type II aperture.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The two piece hardwood stock has a pistol grip, Type IA barrel band with sling loop, sling well, sling pass through and a metal buttplate. The buttplate shows small scratches & small dents as well as some cold blue finish residue. The top of the grip shows a surface repair at the recoil plate. The wood shows various scrapes, scratches and compression marks that have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine overall condition as refurbished.

Type of Finish: Parkerized; Blue Receiver

Finish Originality: Refinished Receiver

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. The rifling is sharp & deep. There is some light fouling in the grooves near the muzzle. There is no erosion. The bore shows an M.E. of 0.5.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. The receiver has been refinished in blue. Surface erosion shows through the blue finish on the receiver. The metal shows scuffs, small scrapes and light thinning on the leading edges of the metal. The bottom metal shows discoloration from oxidation. The right side of the receiver and bolt show thinning from cycling. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories:  The rifle comes with a canvas sling, canvas muzzle cover, dual mag pouch and an aftermarket 10 round magazine. The green canvas sling shows discoloration on the canvas and surface erosion on the metal. It is in about Very Good condition. The muzzle cover is faded. It is in about Very Good condition.The canvas mag pouch shows light soiling and small spots of fraying. The mag pouch is in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition. The magazines show scuffs & light scrapes. It is in about Fine condition.

Our Assessment: This matching Standard Products M1 Carbine was built back in 1944 using an Underwood supplied barrel. The stock and reciever have been refinished so it looks good for a WWII service rifle. The rifle has a strong bright bore and lots of deep Standard Products marks on the metal & wood. This is a nice M1 Carbine for the collector.
