Markings: The import mark consists of 2 partially stamped lines on the barrel flat. The stampings are illegible. The top of the receiver is marked “U.S. CARBINE / CAL. 30 M1” on the front and “INLAND DIV. / 983011” on the rear. The top of the barrel is marked “INLAND MFD. DIV. / GENERAL MOTORS / 10 – 43” and “P”. The right rear of the trigger group is marked “INLAND” which is an Inland mark (page 78 of Craig Riesch’s book, U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production 7th Edition). The hammer is marked “HN” which is a National Postal Meter mark (page 89). The magazine release is marked “M” and “EI” which is an Inland mark (pages 100-101). The rotary safety is marked “M inside a C” which is a post WWII rebuild mark (page 93 & 185). The bottom of the operating slide is marked “7161843-SA” which is a post WWII rebuild mark (page 65 & 185). The bolt is marked “2” and “OI” on the left lug which is an Inland mark (page 36). The front sight is marked “R P” which is a Rock-Ola mark ( page 56). The Type III rear sight is marked”J.A.O. / 7160060” which is a post WWII rebuild mark (page 29). The Type III barrel band is marked “JM” which is a Post WWII rebuild mark (page 59). The interior of the handguard is marked “OI” which is an Inland mark (page 138). The sling well is marked with a faded “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 108).

Barrel Length: Approximately 18 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a post set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a Type III adjustable aperture assembly.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock has a pistol grip, Type III barrel band with sling loop & bayonet lug, sling well, sling pass through and a metal buttplate. The wood shows various scrapes & scratches that have damaged small portions of the gloss finish. The most prominent marks are below the left side of the receiver. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine overall condition as refinished.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original to Rebuild

Bore Condition: The lands are bright and the grooves are semi bright. The muzzle & the grooves near the muzzle are light grey.  The rifling is sharp. There is fouling and light erosion in the grooves near the muzzle. The bore shows an M.E. of 2.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. The metal shows scuffs, light scrapes & areas of discoloration. The right side of the receiver & bolt show thinning consistent with cycling. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: There is No magazine. The rifle comes with a green canvas sling that is in about Fine condition.

Our Assessment: This Inland M1 Carbine was made back in 1943. It looks great for a WWII service rifle. The rifle was refinished when it was rebuilt so it does not look like a 78 year old wartime rifle. It has lots of nice markings on the metal including Inland marks on the barrel & receiver.
