Action Type: Semi Auto, Detachable Magazine. There is No magazine.

Markings: There is no visible import mark. The top of the receiver is marked “U.S. CARBINE / CAL. .30 M1” on the front and “STD. PRO. / 2212085” on the rear. The left side of the receiver is marked “1 5 B” below the wood line. The top of the barrel is marked “UNDERWOOD / 2-44 / flaming bomb” an “P”. Underwood supplied dated barrels to Standard Products for assembly (pages 50 of Craig Riesch’s book, U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production). The left rear of the trigger group is marked “ST” which is a Standard Products mark (page 78). The hammer is marked “SW” which is a Standard Products mark (page 89 – 90). The magazine release is marked “SW” which is a Standard Products mark (page 100-101). The smooth push button safety is unmarked which is consistent with Standard Products and others (page 95 & 184 ). The inside of the operating slide is marked “circled S” which is a Standard Products mark (page 65). The bolt is marked “44S” on the left lug which is a Standard Products mark (page 36). The front sight is marked “N” which is consistent with Standard Products and others (page 56). The Type II rear sight is marked “H in a shield” which is a Standard Products mark (page 29-30). The Type IA barrel band is unmarked which is consistent with Standard Products and others (page 59). The underside of the handguard is marked “S-HB” which is a Standard Products mark (page 138). The sling well is marked “S-HB” which is a Standard Products mark (page 108-109). The right side of the butt is marked with a “crossed cannons” cartouche. It is the correct size and location for a Standard Products marked stock (page 122 & 125).The buttplate is marked “S-S3” which is a Standard Products mark (page 114).

Barrel Length: Approximately 18 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a post set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable Type II aperture.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The two piece hardwood stock has a pistol grip, Type IA barrel band with sling loop, sling well, sling pass through and a metal buttplate. The buttplate shows scrapes. The wood shows scrapes, scratches and compression marks. The handguard shows deep scrapes & compression marks which have damaged or removed wood. Most of these marks have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus overall condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. The rifling is sharp & deep. There is some light fouling in the grooves near the muzzle. There is no erosion. The bore shows an M.E. of 0.9.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 94% of its metal finish. The metal shows scuffs, small scrapes and light thinning on the leading edges of the metal. The barrel shows a freckling of light surface erosion. The right side of the receiver and bolt show light thinning from cycling.  The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition.

Mechanics: The trigger housing pin is missing. The pin holds the trigger group to the receiver. The trigger group and receiver stay securely in place once the action and stock are assembled. This is an inexpensive part that is available on-line.
The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: There is No magazine.

Our Assessment: This matching Standard Products M1 Carbine was built back in 1944 using an Underwood supplied barrel. The rifle looks good, has a strong bright bore and lots of deep Standard Products marks on the metal & wood. This is an ideal M1 Carbine for the collector.
