Markings: The left side of the barrel at the receiver is marked “7.62 NATO” and with an inspection mark. The right side of the barrel is marked with a test mark. The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number and “Remington / MODEL 40-X”. The bolt is matched and hand inscribed “18084”.

Barrel Length: 27 1/4”

Sights / Optics: The barrel at the muzzle has a pair of drilled, tapped, and filled holes. The barrel towards the rear is installed with a male dovetail base. The chamber ring is installed with a male dovetail base. The receiver bridge has a pair of drilled, tapped, and filled holes. The left of the receiver at the rear is installed with a one-piece sight base.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is smooth laminate wood with a thumbhole grip with finger grooves, thumb rest on the right of the grip, cheekpiece, inlaid accessory rail, and an adjustable buttpad. The top front of the comb is relieved for clearance of the bolt. There are some little compressions and marks through the finish, the most noticeable are on the bottom of the forend and top of the comb. There is a light scratch on the front of the grip at the bottom. There are some pools of finish, most noticeable on the belly. The LOP measures 14” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad as configured. The buttpad shows light wear from normal use. The stock rates in about Fine overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosoion.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. There are a few little marks from use and storage, mostly on the barrel. The bolt has some little spots of dark discoloration from previous oxidation. The bolt handle has some thinning from use. There are some little scratches and scrapes on the rear of the bolt. There is some standard operational wear. The screwheads are sharp to lightly worn with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: Introduced in 1962, the Remington 40-X series has been a staple of bench-rest shooting for more than half a century. The Remington Custom Shop produces all of the rifles in this series to ensure superior performance. This example is  a 40XB International Match in Fine Plus condition would make a great rifle for someone looking to get into precision shooting. This one is chambered for 7.62×51 NATO, has a great bore, and has a nice thumbhole stock. The Model 40-x is well known for its accuracy and built quality, and the 40XB International Match rifles are exceedingly scarce.
