Markings: The import mark on the barrel flat reads “SHERWOOD / NORTHRIDGE, CA”. The top of the receiver is marked “U.S. CARBINE / CAL. 30 M1” on the front and “INLAND DIV. / 600390” on the rear. The top of the barrel is marked “INLAND MFD. DIV. / GENERAL MOTORS / 8 – 43” and “P” (under the barrel band). The right rear of the trigger group is marked “INLAND” which is an Inland mark (page 78 of Craig Riesch’s book, U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production 7th Edition). The hammer is marked with an upside down “W” which is a White Sewing Machine Co. subcontractor mark (page 88 & 89). The Type IV magazine release is marked “AD / M” which is a repair/rebuild mark (pages 99 & 100-101). The Type 4 rotary safety is marked “EI” which is an Inland mark and “circled S” which is a post WWII rebuild mark (page 95 & 185). The inside of the operating slide is marked “PI” which is an Inland mark (page 65). The bolt is marked “A.I.” on the left lug which is an Inland mark (page 36). The front sight is unmarked which was used by Inland and others (page 56). The Type II rear sight is marked with a faded “crossed cannons” stamp and “SA” which are Springfield, post WWII rebuild marks (page 29 & 185). The Type III barrel band is marked “KI” which is an Inland mark (page 59). The interior of the handguard is marked “HI” which is an Inland mark (page 138). The sling well is marked “P-U” which is an Underwood mark (page 108-109). The left side of the but is marked “.U.” which is an Underwood Elliot Fisher (private contractor) rebuild mark (page 184). The right side of the buttstock is marked with an Underwood cartouche, a “rectangle” containing “GHD / UEF”  and “crossed cannons” (page 120).

Barrel Length: Approximately 18 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a post set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable Type II aperture assembly.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock has a pistol grip, Type III barrel band with sling loop & bayonet lug, sling well, sling pass through and a metal buttplate.The barrel band shows long scrapes & discoloration from oxidation. The wood shows scrapes and scratches. Some have damaged small portions of the surface wood. The bottom of the forearm has some paint residue on it.  The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright. The grooves near the muzzle are light grey. The rifling is sharp. There is fouling & intermittent light erosion in the grooves near the muzzle. The fouling should clean up some. The bore shows an M.E. of 1.3.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish as refinished. The barrel shows long scrapes on the left as well as discoloration. The metal shows other small scrapes & small scratches. The right side of the receiver (light) and the bolt show thinning consistent with cycling. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition as refinished.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a green canvas sling that is in about Fine condition.

Our Assessment: This Inland Division M1 Carbine was made back in 1943. After WWII it served a U.S. friendly country. It was eventually rebuilt and imported back into the U.S. for sales to the civilian market. Luckily the import mark is on the barrel flat, so no one will see it unless they disassemble the rifle.
