Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON”, the right side is marked “44 MAGNUM”. The crane cut is marked with the model and serial numbers. The butt of the grip frame is marked with the serial number. The crane and sides of the grip frame have inspection marks. The left side of the frame is marked with the S&W monogram logo. The right side of the frame is marked with the four-line marcas registradas.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated ramped blade with an orange insert pinned to a ramped base which is integral to the rib, it has been painted bright orange by a previous owner. The rear sight is a square notched white outlined leaf in a click base that is adjustable for windage and elevation screwed to the top strap.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grip is a Smith & Wesson branded black rubber Hogue monogrip with finger grooves, molded monogram logos, and their pebble texture. There are some scattered light marks and a couple of faint scuffs. The texturing is strong. There are no gashes or tears. Overall, the grips are in about Fine-Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the Electro Chemically Machined rifling is strong. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 97% of its metal finish. There are some scattered draglines and handling marks from use and storage. There are a couple of scuffs that have caused small smooth spots, most noticeable on the sides of the barrel at the muzzle. There are a couple of faint scratches on the cylinder and backstrap, hardly noticeable. The cylinder also has a light turn line. There are some spots of discoloration on the grip frame towards the bottom. There is some discoloration on the hammer and trigger. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Fine Plus condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The double-action trigger is smooth and the single action is crisp. The cylinder lockup has hardly any play on all chambers. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The 629 has been made in a variety of configurations since 1979 filling just about any role that could be asked of a .44 Magnum revolver. This example is the 629-5 with a 6″ barrel, Hogue Monogrip and a stainless finish. The .44 Magnum is a stout round and will be good protection against just about anything you’ll encounter in North America, no matter if it walks on four legs or two. The gun is in Fine Plus condition with a few scattered light marks, a great bore, and strong mechanics.
