Markings: The top of the receiver is marked “USMC PROPERTY, MODEL MC-58 / H&R MODEL #65 MODIFIED / HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON INC.”. The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number. The top of the barrel is marked “USMC PROPERTY / HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON ARMS INC. / WORCESTER, MASS. U.S.A.”. The left side of the barrel is marked “22 CAL. LONG RIFLE ONLY”. The bottom of the barrel is marked “35” and the bottom of the forend is stamped “35”. The bottom of the bottom of the wrist is stamped with three stars above an eagle all in a box

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade with protective ears, it is integral to a barrel band base which is mounted to the barrel with a set screw. The rear sight is a Redfield aperture peep sight screwed to the left side of the receiver. It is adjustable for windage and elevation.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is smooth one-piece walnut with a pistol grip and a straight comb. There are some scattered light compressions, a few little dings, and a couple of shallow scratches. The defects are most noticeable on the top of the wrist and left side of the stock at about the action but are scattered throughout. The LOP measures 13 1/4″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the metal buttplate. The buttplate has some discoloration, nicks, and little scratches. The stock rates in about Fine overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. There are a couple of scratches and nicks, the most noticeable are on the top of the receiver at the front and on the trigger guard. There are some little oil marks. There are a few rubs and little marks from use and handling. The markings are well defined and easily read. The screw heads are lightly worn with strong channels. Overall this rifle rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: A 10-round mag is included. The mag has had a little tab welded to the bottom to aid in removal. The mag has some scattered finish loss and a few spots of scabbing, in about Very Good condition.
Our Assessment: This Model 58C was manufactured between 1944-1945 and is the military designation for the Model 65. It was designed for the military to train with less expensive ammo and free up valuable .30-06. The rifle has the same sight picture and length of pull as the M1 Garand it was meant to emulate and is much heavier than other .22 rifles. While the action is vastly different than the M1, it was meant to get soldiers accustomed to semi-automatics rather than bolt actions, and at that it excelled. This is a well-built rifle with great balance, accuracy, and proven dependability. According to H&R, the Model 65 rifle was even subjected to 144,000 rounds while being tested by the marine corps and passed with flying colors. These rifles are unique with their charging rod hidden by the stock similar to the submachine guns of the Reising name. This 58C rifle has a bright bore, sharp rifling, strong mechanics, and even comes with one mag. This will make a great addition to a collection of U.S. martial arms for a collector who has the mainstays and wants something a little more obscure, drop a bid on this C&R rifle today.
