Markings: The barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. / CONN. U.S.A. PAT. JUNE 26. 88. DEC. 6. 92. NOV. 27. 06. MAY 30. 1911 / MOD. 06” and “22 SHORT – LONG / OR LONG RIFLE”. The upper tang is marked “TRADE MARK / WINCHESTER / REG. IN U.S. PAT. OFF. & FGN.” The lower tang is marked with the serial number, as is the barrel assembly.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a steel blade dovetailed into the barrel and the rear sight is a leaf and screw-elevator “U” notch sight screwed to the barrel.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are smooth walnut. The ribbed forend shows light handling marks and faint compression marks. There are no cracks. The buttstock has marks and dings, especially at the toe/belly. The wood is quite attractive, with much original finish. There are no cracks. The LOP measures 13 ¼” from the front of the trigger to the back of the plastic Winchester buttplate. The buttplate shows only light handling marks and discoloration and rates in about fine condition. The stocks rate in about Fine overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is shallow. There is no erosion.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows handling wear and surface scratching from imperfect storage. Some finish is beginning to flake off of the action slide arm and the right rear radius of the frame is thinning and turning brown. Aside from this, there is a lot of finish remaining and this is a very attractive rifle. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good – Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. The action is “gritty” and needs a better cleaning.

Our Assessment: Ever since 1890, when Winchester brought out a slide-action rifle with that year’s model number, the Model 1890 pretty much ruled the roost for rimfire repeaters, also known as gallery guns in a specific configuration. This tubular-magazine rimfire was wildly popular not only in the plethora of shooting galleries that were across the U.S. but in the hands of young boys and men who loved to shoot and hunt small game. The Model 1890 was a John Browning design and the first successful repeating rimfire rifle. Sixteen years later an almost identical rifle (sans the expensive-to-manufacture octagon barrel and crescent buttplate) was introduced as the Model 1906.
Produced from 1905-1935 and with 731,852 manufactured, this was quite a successful gun for Winchester. Large groups of serial numbers were skipped resulting in serial numbers reaching 848,000 This was the second pump action .22 produced by Winchester, designed by John Browning and is known as a Gallery Gun. This one is mechanically sound and very attractive! This rifle appears to have been used very little and would be right at home in your collection.
