Markings: The bottom tang is marked with the serial number “6973”. The top of the barrel is marked “CAL 35” and “MAN’F’D BY STANDARD ARMS CO. / WILMINGTON, DELAWARE U.S.A.”. The left side of the barrel is marked “M.F. SMITHS PAT’S PATENTED MAR. 6. APR. 10. / APR. 24. 1906. OTHER PATENTS PENDING”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed into a base at the front of the barrel. The rear sight is an aperture peep sight screwed to the top tang. We were unable to adjust the elevation.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The forend is brass and the buttstock is smooth wood. The forend has deep decorative trees and the left has a bust of a wolf and the right side has a bust of a moose. The buttstock has a straight grip, a straight comb, and a brass buttplate with deep decorative designs. The forend has some scuffs, rubs, and some little scratches. The exposed brass has tarnished. The buttstock has some scattered compressions, draglines, and dings. There are a couple of little nicks and scratches. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has “SA CO” in decorative lettering. The brass has some tarnish and some little dings. The stocks rate in about Very Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. There are some scattered scuffs that have thinned the finish, scratches, nicks, and spots of oil. The edges have finish loss. There is some finish loss on the bottom of the floorplate at the front and on the tube in front of the receiver from use. The screw that secures the floorplate is shy on the left side. The bolt body shows light operational wear. The screw heads are lightly used with strong slots and the markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: In 1906, Morris Smith designed and patented the Model G, a semi-automatic and pump action rifle. Smith was the first person to apply for a patent on a rifle that was gas-operated. To select the action type there is a little knob at the front of the gas tube which can enable or disable the gas system. Since it was one of the first gas-operated semi-autos, Mr. Smith was venturing in uncharted territory which led to some design shortcomings. The design flaws were primarily in semi-auto operation which would eventually lead the company to discontinue the rifle. The rifle was available in .25, .30, and .35 Remington, good calibers of the time but had a little too much pressure for the design. Approximately 7,000 were made making them a nice piece for C&R collectors and they also represent a piece of arms development history.
