Model: M1 Garand Navy MK2 MOD 1 (Mark 2 Model 1) Grade B Match Rifle. An M1 Garand converted to 7.62 NATO by the installation of a Military contract 7.62x51mm barrel. This rifle was Match Conditioned by the Naval Ordnance and awarded to the winner of a Naval Rifle Match.

Trigger Group: “D28290-14-SA” – A Springfield part (page 90 of Joe Poyer’s M1 GARAND 1936 to 1957, 6th Edition). The bottom interior is marked with the last 4 digits of the serial number “1776” in electric pencil.
Hammer: “C46008-7 SA”– A Springfield part (page 98).
Safety: “SA-11” –A Springfield part  (page 104).
Follower: “13” – Used by Springfield and Winchester (page 83).
Receiver Leg: “A 2 3 B” “D 28291 35” –Correct for the Springfield serial number (page 29).
Op Rod: “NM” on top and “7790722-RA” – A Springfield National Match part (page 71).
Bolt: “D28287-19SA / 0-15” – A Springfield part (page 53). The bottom is marked with the last 4 digits of the serial number “1776” in electric pencil and with a faded number.
Barrel:“SA 11010457”, “SPL 10 65 MD50”, “P”, “M”, with a Defense “Eagle” Acceptance stamp and “7.62 MM” – A Springfield barrel (pages 61-63) chambered in 7.62 NATO. For more detailed information on the markings see page 582 to 585 of Bruce Canfield’s book, The M1 Garand Rifle.
The stock and sights are described below.

Barrel Length: Approximately 24 Inches

Sights / Optics: The rifle has National Match sights installed. The right side of the front sight is marked “NM / 062”. The top of the aperture is marked “520”. The face of the aperture’s riser is marked “NM”.
The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight set between two protective wings. The windage knob is marked “LEFT arrow” twice and “SA”. The elevation knob is marked from “2-12” in increments of two and “WC E”.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The bottom of the grip is marked with a “B” filled with white paint. This is a Grade “B” Match Rifle marking (page 584 of Bruce Canfield’s book, The M1 Garand Rifle). The top edge of the stock is stamped with the last 4 digits of the serial number “1776” under the receiver which is correct for a MK2 MOD 1 Match Rifle (page 583 Canfield).
The top, interior and bottom of the stock have each been built up with epoxy to tightly fit the receiver and trigger group.
The hardwood stock has a pistol grip, metal nose caps, stacking loop, two sling loops and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage in the butt. The butttplate shows scrapes & small scratches. The top rear of the handguard shows a repaired crack. The wood shows various scrapes, scratches and compression marks. Some have damaged small portions of the surface wood or finish. The LOP measures 13 ? inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine overall condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original to Arsenal Rebuild

Bore Condition: The bore is bright; semi bright near the muzzle. The rifling is sharp & deep. There is some fouling in the grooves at the muzzle. There is no erosion. The bore shows an M.E. of 0.5.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The metal shows scuff & light handling marks. The rear sight cover plate shows oxidation. The right side of the receiver shows light thinning consistent with cycling. The markings on the metal are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories:  The rifle comes with its original shipping box, long term storage “white bag”, shipping invoice, record book, Armorer’s tag and a sling.
The shipping box is marked with postage & shipping information that includes “NAVSURFWARCENDIV” and “CRANE IN” (Naval Surface Warfare Center Division in Crane). The box shows staining, surface tears and tape residue. Overall it is in about Very Good condition.
The rifle comes in its original long term storage “white bag”. The white bag is marked with the rifle’s serial number written in permanent ink. The white bag is dated “JAN. 1982”. Its markings include “RIFLE 7.62MM MK2-1 GR B SAMCU / 1 EACH / A-10/82”. The bag shows light discoloration, creasing and 2 small tears. Overall it is in about Very Good Plus condition.
The “INVOICE / SHIPPING DOCUMENT” is from the Naval Surface Warfare Center Division in Crane, IN. It lists the original owner’s name and the name of who he later sold it to. It lists the rifle’s serial number and “SEC AWARD RIFLE, MK2”. It shows screasing and discoloration. It is in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition. The armorer’s tag and record book are each marked “RIFLE CAL 7.62 / MK 2 M 1 GR B” and with the rifle’s serial number. The tag is also marked “MATCH CONDITIONED”.The tag shows discoloration and is in about Very Good Plus condition. The log book is in about Fine condition.
The leather sling is marked “MRT / 5-95” on the bottom and “circled B” on both metal claws. The metal shows light scrapes. The leather shows light discoloration, scuffs & light compression marks. Overall it is in about Very Good Plus condition

Our Assessment:  This Springfield M1 Garand Navy MK2 MOD1 Grade B Match Rifle is chambered in 7.62 NATO. It was awarded to the winner of a Naval Rifle match. It comes in its original shipping box & “white bag”. The rifle also comes with original invoice/shipping paperwork.
This Springfield Armory M1 Garand Navy was originally produced back in 1945 as a standard M1 Garand. It was later converted to M1 Garand Navy MK2 MOD1 configuration by the installation of a Military contract 7.62 NATO barrel. It was later accurized & Match Conditioned by Naval Ordnance.
This is a rare, highly collectible Grade B Match Rifle that will add to any M1 Garand collection.
