Markings: The import mark under the barrel is in small partially stamped text. It reads “ARL ORD ARLINGTON VA”. The top of the receiver is marked “U.S. CARBINE / CAL. 30 M1” on the front and “INLAND DIV. / 5462160” on the rear. The top of the barrel is marked “I.B.M. CORP.” and “P” (under the barrel band). The right rear of the trigger group is marked “ROCK-OLA” which is a Rock Ola mark (page 78 of Craig Riesch’s book, U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production 7th Edition). The hammer is marked “HI” which is an Inland mark (page 89). The Type IV magazine release is marked “M” which is a late WWII mark (pages 98 & 100-101). The rotary safety is marked “HT” which is a post WWII rebuild mark (page 95 & 185). The inside of the operating slide is marked “PI” which is an Inland mark (page 65). The bolt is marked “.U.” under the left lug which is an Underwood mark (page 36). The front sight is unmarked which was used by Inland and others (page 56). The Type III rear sight is marked “H in a shield” which is a Winchester mark (page 29). The Type III barrel band is marked “MMQ” on the band and “EM-Q” on the lug. These are Quality Hardware marks (page 59). The interior of the handguard is marked “P-U” which is an Underwood mark (page 138). The recoil plate is marked “SG” which is a Saginaw Gear mark (page 135). The rear of the magazines are marked “SW”, a Winchester mark, and “AI”, an Inland mark (page 142-143). The front of the magazine pouch is marked “U.S.” and the rear is marked “AVERY 1943”.

Barrel Length: Approximately 18 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a post set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable Type III aperture assembly.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock has a pistol grip, Type III barrel band with sling loop & bayonet lug, sling well, sling pass through and a metal buttplate. The buttplate shows discoloration as well as small scratches on the edges. The handguard is lighter in color than the rest of the wood. The wood shows various scrapes and scratches that have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus overall condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Refinished Receiver

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright. The muzzle and the grooves in the front third of the bore are light grey. The rifling is sharp. The muzzle and the grooves in the front third of the bore show fouling & light intermittent erosion. The fouling should clean up some. The bore shows an M.E. of 1.8.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. The receiver has been refinished. The metal shows light scrapes & small scratches. The bottom metal shows discoloration. The right side of the receiver (light) and the bolt show thinning consistent with cycling. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a sling, dual mag pouch and 2 magazines. The green canvas sling shows light scrapes & light oxidation on the metal. It is in about Fine condition. The canvas mag pouch shows light soiling and small spots of fraying. The mag pouch is in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition. The rifle also comes with two 15 round magazines. The magazines show scrapes and scratches. They are in about Very Good Plus condition.
The 15 round magazines are not available to residents of California or any other state with magazine capacity restrictions.

Our Assessment: This Inland Division M1 Carbine was made back in 1944. After WWII it served a U.S. friendly country. It was eventually rebuilt and imported back into the U.S. for sales to the civilian market. Luckily the import mark on the bottom of the barrel is very small and looks more like a scrape than an import mark. The rifle comes with a sling, dual mag pouch and 2 magazines.
